Federal Employees- Unemployment?

Anonymous
No one knows if there will be backpay or not.

In previous shutdowns (the last of which was in 1995-96), everyone got backpay.

But the times are different, the leadership (or lack thereof) is different and I would not be holding my breath for backpay.

I work for a company that has a contract, so I am not fed, but will be furloughed. No benefits or unemployment for me. Cannot save because my salary is not big enough, all my money goes. I have no idea what I will do

Yes, times have changed and absolutely no way will there be backpay. Not happening.

Absolutely not huh? Please, the only absolute at this point is that NOBODY knows what will happen.

Look, I'm a Fed myself and would like nothing better but let's be realistic. Anyone who thinks Feds are going to get paid for *not working* in this political climate is delusional. We have been furloughed. Our pay has been frozen. Congress doesn't even want to pay us when we do work. The bottom line is this is nothing like 1995 and I have co-workers who aren't even planning because they were around back then and think it will be the same. People need to wake up and face reality or they could be in big financial trouble. Please don't encourage others to believe in this fairy tale.

Right, OP here, I am certianly not counting on backpay, but would gladly return the unemployment benefits in that happy event. My question is just focused on whether, and how, I can get unemployment benefits on Oct. 1, as a fed who lives and works in DC. No official advice from my agency HR yet, unfortunately.

Furlough doesn't qualify for unemployment. Plus, when they take a look at your bank account saved from your high paying job, you will not qualify for unemployment.

Your personal balances have NOTHING to do with your eligibility for unemployment. Stop hating and get your head out of your a$$.

Most contractors get benefits and unemployment. You must be hired specifically with no benefits and you agreed to that at time of hire, so I do not see the issue. If you know you will lose your job, you look for a new one on a more stable contract now before you lose your job with a bunch of other people, also looking. Worst case, you get a store job or take anything just to bring in come income till you get another job. I do't get the boo hoo when you see an issue coming and are not proactive about getting another job or second job and work it out.

I am overseas. I live in an apartment rented for me by the USG. My DD attends a private school paid for by the USG. What happens when the USG does not pay the $5K monthly rent or the $4K monthly tuition on top of not paying me my salary? Will they also have to make good on the latter two even if I receive no back pay?

Very interesting question. Our leadership has ordered the return home of all TDY employees rather than expose them to the possibility of personal responsibility for hotel rooms and other expenses next week should the government shut. Reimbursement would be subject to an Act of Congress. If the agreement on your apartment is between USG and the landlord, you'll be fine. Same with school I would think. If you're paying for these and getting reimbursed it may be a very sticky wicket.

But don't panic or anything.

Both apartment and school are paid directly. This whole situation is embarrassing. No way to run a superpower!

It isn't a matter of panicking. If the govt shuts down on Tuesday, agencies cannot legally pay for hotels, plane tickets, etc. I would be surprised to hear of agencies that haven't ordered those traveling to get back by Monday (not including those like PP who live overseas). I know a few agencies that have canceled meetings and events next week because they should be paying stipends and travel for people, but can't be certain of the funds.

Point is, by now even if they do pass a CR, Congress has cost the govt a lot of money, and caused major disruption to government functions. The biggest wasters of taxpayer dollars are those in Congress.
