Not everyone has an expensive event, as others have explained. Not all Jews have the money to throw an expensive party. I'm sure it is the same way among Catholics. Some have more money than others. Some throw extravagant parties and some cannot afford it. Jews are no different.

Even if you don't have a party a bar mitzhah is still expensive because you have to serve a lunch to everyone in the temple

Every synagogue has their different traditions. My synagogue has the bar mitzvah family pay for the kid dish for the congregation. The kid rush doesn't have to be extravagant. It can be simple and inexpensive. At the synagogue I grew up going to, the kid rush was a few cakes, challah, and wine. At my friend's synagogue, a bunch of members pitch in and bring food for a luncheon after the service. Each synagogue is different.

WRONG.

She's not wrong. You pay for a kiddush or oneg which may only be challah and some cookies and soda but the synagogue will charge you $1,000 as a donation. Being an observant Jew is for the wealthy

Still wrong. Sorry you're going to a temple that charges you for more than you're getting. And I'm not sure what your last sentence is about - we're conservative and our kids are getting bat mitzvah'd but we would never say we're observant jews.

Why would anyone assume every synagogue has the same policy on lunch?? Or that everyone would have a kosher party (eliminating the taco bar)?

Because all Jews everywhere are all exactly identically the same, that's why.

(Except for the part where this isn't actually true.)

PP, you are very misinformed. What you have written is not true.
