Monthly credit card bill

$1500-1800 per month. Our budget is $1600. This is for groceries, gas, any meals purchased out, household/personal items, Costco, gym membership, cell phone bill, Amazon purchases, and miscellaneous (doctor copays, prescriptions, clothes, oil changes, etc.) Does not include preschool or utilities. We are a family of 5 and it is very hard to stick to this budget but we have no choice at the moment.

$6-10k/month

$2-4k, incl. all groceries, car expenses, restaurants, most things other than mortgage and insurance.

Always pay in full.

Okay, I know this is an ignorant question.

Is there really that much more benefit to using a credit card vs your debit card? My husband and I have considered putting all or most of our expenses on a credit card. Are there just marginal benefits or do you really notice a difference such as cash back, airline miles, etc?

If you know how to play the game, yes. Even with a basic 2% card if you spend $100,000 a year that's 2,000 in your pocket. If you do the miles game you can do even better. SPG, united etc - spend like that can add up to 2 or 3 round trip tickets to Europe per year, and if you really pay attention it's conceivable to get enough miles for 4 to 5 business class tickets to Europe or South America per year.

$0. Don't have one. Just use my debit card. And for cash back I use PayPal debit card tied to my bank account.

Cashflow and fraud protection. You have to pay your CC bill at the end of the month, not after each purchase.

Also cc's have better fraud protection in terms of limited liability.

This way, if your CC is compromised, you still hvae your debit card to operate from while it takes the CC company 5 days to send you a new card. (Just had this happen a few months ago, know from experience.. but was fun explaining to DW that it wasn't me that tried to buy a match.com subscription!)

Credit cards - if you find fraud, you put a stop/report on it and dont pay the disputed charges. Debit card, you have to persuade them to put the money back. I wont have a debit card.

Between $500-$1000/month. Paid in full at the end of the month.

LOL!

Ok, probably a dumb question but- for those families who use one card for miles, I assume both parents have their own. Is it the same number? I am mid 20s and don't have any experience w joint accounts so just curious

Yeah 2 cards, each with the same number on it.

Actually for DW and I, we each have our own CCs, then have a second card in the other person's name which we give to them in case they need to use it.

Mainly because I pay for X-type expenses (groceries, gas) and she pays for Y-type expenses (baby clothes) so then we can use the other person's card if it's for that.
