Tell me about UNC - Chapel Hill, from an out of state perspective

It's just a state school in N.C.

DD has put it on her list.

Is Chapel Hill really in the same ballpark as the top public universities? What's life like for a student from outside of NC (or the south). Does the name/reputation have enough cachet outside of the south?

Berkeley is by itself.

Nowadays, if you're the kind of out-of-state kid with the stats it takes to get into UNC, you'll also get into other places that you'd rather go to

Sure, Michigan will put you on the inside track for all those jobs in the Midwest, especially Detroit, but UNC is a stronger name in the south - where jobs are available.

I spend a lot of time in Asian and Europe and I don't think either school has real strong name recognition in either region, but I don't doubt that Michigan is more well known. In Asia it's mainly Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT and the top California schools Stanford, Cal, UCLA and USC.

When you have no idea what you're talking about but are nonetheless not shy about sharing your opinion! Do you have any idea how many Michigan grads live in NYC, LA, Chicago and DC? Michigan is a huge draw from both coasts.

I would agree. It is super hard to get in from OOS.

+1 Way harder to get into OOS than Michigan. DS friend got rejected at UNC but accepted at Penn and Northwestern. 35 ACT and UW 4.0

That's great, but if money is a factor it's not worth it.

+1 I went to UNC as an OOS. I transferred out. Not worth the OOS tuition to go to a school that the in-staters considered their safety.

Yes, really difficult to get into. I know kids that got into UVA but rejected from UNC.

I can't offer too much insight in it b/c DD didn't end up going there, but when we toured the school and visited Chapel Hill, we fell in love with it. The campus is gorgeous and the town is really cute. It seems like one of those great places where you can get a good education and have a lot of fun, too.

And not have to go to class

Sorry, couldn't resist!

So all these smart kids from OOS (like 10%?) get mixed in with so-so kids from NC. I don’t know if that’s a good thing.

Definitely not on the same level as Cal and UCLA. Not quite on the same level as UVA (these days). I’d say it’s somewhere between Michigan and UW-Madison.

+1

This was my experience. I was OOS (NY) and didn't feel very challenged. I also never quite fit in socially, as many of the in-state kids came in with groups of friends. I stayed because they were paying. Overall, not a terrible experience, but not great either.

i don't know any North Carolinians that consider Chapel Hill a safety. And yes, I went there OOS and now my friends' kids are starting to apply there. It is on the same level as UVA. I know plenty of people who couldnt get into either and ended up at UWisconsin - Madison. The OOS acceptance rate at UNC now is ridiculously low, insanely, insanely low. So yes, the kind of kid who can get into UNC OOS is probably also the kind of kid who has the grades/stats/credentials to have a good chance at ivys.

there is a famous UNC basher on DCUM and looks like they're back. They derail every single UNC thread, when people want a sincere discussion. So annoying.
