Whoa! This site is not only an invasion of privacy, it's an identity theft risk, too. Whose brilliant idea was it anyway? |
Total comp. bonuses are listed |
Public accountability. |
|
Federal salaries are a matter of public record. The amounts listed are not the amount actually paid or received in a given year, so don't show what's on a W-2 for example.
What is the specific identity theft risk, 19:40? For years every federal employee's job title and Grade/step have been public information. This merely attaches the current salary for that level and includes any bonus paid. I was a fed for 26 yrs. including being a ethics official for a large office. I'm not terribly upset about this, as courts have said, sunshine is the best disinfectant and it's useful to be able to see this information. It's public money and public information. |
Does it include pension contributions and other benefits? |
No |
Not PP but I disagree with identifying salaries for individuals by name, especially for workers in the lower pay grades. In reality, it's probably more useful for federal employees as a tool to negotiate compensation relative to their peers. |
|
THat information also doesn't include recruitment and retention bonuses, etc. Alot of money can be hidden when the FOIA request doesn't ask the exact right questions.
|
Recruitment and retention bonuses in the federal govt? I have never heard of such a thing. |
Recruitment bonuses are possible but very rare. I've only ever seen it for esoteric, tough jobs in less than desirable locations. Modest performance bonuses are awarded but I've never heard of a "retention" bonus. |
Looks like the medical officers are the highest paid feds

| There are several people at our agency who have retention bonuses, and even recruitment bonuses to go from one position to another, in-agency. I know of people who went to other regulators and were given recruitment bonuses. Maybe it doesn't happen on the GS scale, but off the GS scale, you might be surprised how often it happens. It just doesn't show up on the fed database for salaries. And we're not talking small amounts - tens of thousands sometimes. |
Oh my gosh, this website is amazing and pretty accurate. |
I think it is a security risk for people and a violation of privacy. Not everybody needs to know where you work. Salary I agree is ok but your agency and location not so much. At the end of the day though, if you know someone's GS level and location, you know their salary range already. It creeps me out that my ex can find out where I am during the day. |
yes, the doctors you listed are a Cardiothoracic (open heart) surgeon and a transplant surgeon. Some of the most highly trained physicians there are (9+ years of residency after medical school). Both could make much more in the private sector. By law, the VA doesn't have to follow the GS scale for physician pay so they can provide all aspects of health care to veterans (including open heart surgery, etc). The vast majority their physicians make far, far less and fall well within the federal pay scale. My husband (an internist) was hired at about $140k. Also, salaries are very strictly regulated by specialty and transparent. |
