Some of the most highly trained physicians there are (9+ years of residency after medical school). Both could make much more in the private sector. By law, the VA doesn't have to follow the GS scale for physician pay so they can provide all aspects of health care to veterans (including open heart surgery, etc). The vast majority their physicians make far, far less and fall well within the federal pay scale. My husband (an internist) was hired at about $140k. Also, salaries are very strictly regulated by specialty and transparent. [/quote]
