Middle School Magnet Test

Ethical panic? Nope. Just trying to do the best thing for my child.

That's what the poor and unemployed bank robber said after she was caught trying to rob the bank, My child needed food. Just doing the best thing for my child.

Wow, that was over the top. I didn't prep my CHILD for the HGC, but I might for MS. I want the best odds I can get.

My, my, my. In a fit of ethical panic. You didn't cheat at the HGC level but you are considering cheating for MS because the ends justifies the means? All children who prep for their studies and tests deserve expulsion.

If your child has to study to get into the program, (s)he doesn't belong in the program. I say this as an MCPS teacher, parent, and former magnet student myself.

+1

AAP is for naturally intelligent students who don't study.

... the MCPS magnet programs are similar. These programs are for kids who do not study or prepare (prep).

Enough said. It is crystal clear why your academic trajectory and reach landed you a teaching job in public schools. Well put.

My child might not need to study; doing very well at an HGC now. But I'll probably prepare just in case; you never know if they'll have a bad day testing and every bit helps. Besides, why does MCPS publish examples of the exams? They didn't do this for elementary magnet test in I don't think.

Your shifty ethical bar is now dictated by whether MCPS publishes examples of the exams? You are twisting in the winds.
If MCPS does not publish examples it is unethical and cheating to study and prep' but, if they publish examples then it's open season for prepping and cheating?

New poster here.... Through my academic career I NEVER studied for a standardized test and in my heart of hearts I believe either you know it or you don't. That being said when I woke up and realized how other families strategize over every aspect of their child's lives especially here in DC, I have been forced to adapt accordingly.

You're still adorable! But yes, publishing sample tests imply that they want you to prepare/practice. From the MCPS handbook:

How can I practice?
Please review the following sample items carefully. The samples are presented to you so that you can understand the format of the test. The questions do not reflect the exact content of the test. The preparation you receive by completing the practice items and reviewing the explanations of the answers ensures that, on the day of the test, the committee is getting
an accurate picture of the concepts you understand and the skills you have, instead of simply seeing how well you understand directions.

You're quite right. And this was not because you were brilliant; rather, these tests meant nothing in the past. Everyone took the PSAT and SAT once...then went to Harvard. Today, the testing industry is a multibillion dollar business and the schools are complicit in the meteoric rise and significance of these tests despite their intrinsic worthlessness.

Today most people and students do study and prepare for standardized tests to varying degrees. Some are too embarassed to admit it so they delude themselves in denial and lying with claims of not studying or preparing to boast theirsimple and fragile egos.

DD got in Clemente computer science program. There are preparation that you CAN do.
1. Raven test, do more raven questions exercise will slightly increase the point but not too much. It is rather a long term training of their spatial conception which start playing music instrument at an early age (4 or 5 yo) will greatly increase the ability.
2. Reading comprehension, read read and read, min. 2 or 3 grade above grade level.
3. Math test, again, min. of 2 grade above grade level. Answers have to be fast and correct. No time to re-check.
4. Writing, be creative with contents. This year's question was What can community do (something like that) I believe many many students answered picking up trash, recycling... These kind of answers do not stand out to the selection committee. Of course, the essay has to be well constructed, and grammatically correct.

Hope it helps.

Good lord. This is cheating and immoral. I'm shocked you are allowed to parent children. Don't you know prep is not allowed and we don't prep our children. I wish the schools would screen out all the cheaters.

Whatever. If you decided not to prep your children, and don't believe prep can help, then by all mean go ahead and do nothing, and let your children land wherever.
There aren't failing students, there ARE lazy parents.

Who has greater chance to enter elite colleges? Students in rigorous academic programs in high school.
What is the main student body of high school magnet and RMIB? Middle school magnet students.
What is the main student body of middle magnet ? Elementary school GT.

So be naive, do nothing, and hope you get a bright child who can figure out everything by himself and get on board. I'm sure many many other patents appreciate your naive-ness.

Therefore, if it is not published, or MCPS and teachers or even parents do not instruct the students to study of prepare for upcoming tests, quizzes, exams (standardized or non standardized) then by implication ... no explicit direction then no studying or preparation? Does this hold true for going to the bathroom? Should our kids wait for the announcement or implication?

The name of the PDF published by MCPS is: MSMagnets-TestPrepBooklet.pdf. They want the kids to be prepared for the test. If these are really aptitude tests then preparation should only bring out their innate abilities.

The SAT aptitude test is an aptitude test. Why is this the most prepped for test in the history of mankind and test taken multiple times and prepped for multiple times?
