Charter School parents providing car pools

Anonymous
I have a very basic question. How do folks manage carpools with the need for car seats? My car only fits two car seats, and I have two kids, one of whom is still in a rear-facing infant seat.
Do families just install/reinstall car seats all the time for carpool and then reinstall yet again to get the car ready for the family?

We are in a similar situation - given this, we do not carpool as it is a Royal PITA to do anything with carseats.
I know some families who are fine putting kids in boosters ealy for this reason.
If you took the carseats, replaced the FF once with the slimest you could find, and put in 2 really slim boosters you could fit 3 across the 3rd row - it is tight but doable for most cars.

I'm afraid your car doesn't make you a very good candidate for a carpool. At our school, many of the families who share rides have minivans or they have older children who can just jump in the car without car seats. We can fit 4 kids in our van plus one in the front. That's where my middle schooler sits if we need to take him anywhere and already have a car load of kids. Our toddler's car seat always remains installed and latched in place, and the others sit in boosters or regular seats. We do drop off in the morning -- we get two more kids on the way to school and the other family does pick up after school.

An added benefit? We never run late for school because I know another family is counting on us and I don't want those kids to be tardy on account of us!

MV will have a bus next year, and they are starting to work on matching up families who want to carpool.

What are the bus routes? Or will I be able to find out this information on Saturday? Thanks

At the risk of stating the obvious, YY families are better organized, informed, and resourced than most (if not all) DC families. It doesn't apply to everyone. Do with that what you will.

How much does the YY bus/van cost per month? I've heard it's pretty pricey, and added to aftercare costs it sounded like you're approaching the costs of a private school.

The same as the cost of aftercare and bus in privates? Yes, very close. But, no tuition.

My point was that $800 (or more)/mo. for 9-10 months totals around $8000, which is on par with private school tuition at some schools (eg parochial).

The combined cost of a bus/van and aftercare is certainly not $800, maybe $600 if you are paying the full fare. And I can safely say the school is hands down better than any parochical school you might find for $8k a year! Sure, not everyone can do it but the bus/van is optional-most drive or arrange (free) carpools and there is reduced after care for people who qualify.

MV beforecare is 120 and aftercare is 520. That combined with $4 a day for lunch $15 a month for snacks, adding the shuttle bus service might but you to $800.

Perhaps you should have thought of these added costs before applying to MV. Lots of people would be happy to take your spot.
