Charter School parents providing car pools

Anonymous
Read about this in another thread. Anyone have any specific info. on which schools have a bus service/ car pool run by parents (and/or the school itself)? Which schools and what's the cost/requirement? Also, would this be appropriate for a pre-ker? No trollish responses please!

There are lots of car pools organized by parents at YY. There are also parent organized buses and vans that go to different parts of the city.

Thanks so much for this info! I hope we can a get a slot there or the charters we're trying for. Would the bus/car pool be safe for a Pre-ker?

Bus and carpool are different. We are at YY in a carpool with a preKer. You have to find another family or families you trust to do the carpool with. YY parents organize a map. They get dropped off right at the school door. It feels safe for a PreKer though I would not start on the first day of school.

I think there are some online tools for helping to organize carpools.

BASIS provides bus service to and from school every day. However, the buses leave at 4:00 pm. So on the days your child participates in an extra curricular activity, you must make other arrangements.

Cap City runs a shuttle from Columbia Heights. Not sue its a forever sort of thing since they did to help ease the move but maybe! Or parents could continue it.

RE/ the YY Carpool lane, and YY carpools in general: The bus is very straightforward, especially dependent upon where you live. There are two routes: one from the Hill, the other from Mt. P/U St.

Carpools are so multiple, variable, etc., - it's impossible to keep track of them all. I know of several carpool groups - 2 to 5 families - that exist for the full ride, and others just to get to use the carpool lane, and then drop off just down the street.

One or two logistically-oriented parents should be able to set up a system in the blink of an eye.

At the risk of stating the obvious, YY families are better organized, informed, and resourced than most (if not all) DC families. It doesn't apply to everyone. Do with that what you will.

How much does the YY bus/van cost per month? I've heard it's pretty pricey, and added to aftercare costs it sounded like you're approaching the costs of a private school.

Stokes has a bus service, but I think only children who were at the Columbia Heights location before the school moved are eligible to use it. I think they intend to phase it out. I might be wrong though, so if it's Stokes you're asking about, check into it.

We just figured out which families lived in our neighborhood and set up a (very satisfactory) carpool ourselves. Highly recommended!

The same as the cost of aftercare and bus in privates? Yes, very close. But, no tuition.

Which neighborhood are you coming from and do you think the arrangement is good for a Pre-schooler?

My point was that $800 (or more)/mo. for 9-10 months totals around $8000, which is on par with private school tuition at some schools (eg parochial).

My point is that you are still not appreciating that the tuitions you quote do not include after school or transportation costs.
