Trying to lose 60 lbs in one year

My starting weight was 188 at the beginning of September and I am trying to get to 128 by September 1, 2013. I am only 5'2", so started well into the obese BMI range and I am trying to get into the healthy range.

The Goals: 24lbs lost by December 1, 40 lbs lost by March 1, 52 lbs lost by June 1, and 60 lbs lost by September 1.

The Progress: 12 lbs lost in September and 4.5 lbs lost in October. So I am going to need at least 7.5 lbs in November to meet my first goal.

Anybody attempted/attempting/accomplished something similar?

Heh. Those were my exact numbers, going from 188 to 128 in 9 months. Unfortunately, I was 25. That was a LONG time ago. I hope you do it and come back and report so that your success will inspire me!

OP-I would set much smaller goals based on your behaviors. For example, if I track all my meals for 2 weeks, then I get a pedicure. Or if I complete 12sessions of a work out program, then I get a new dress. You need those rewards all along the way and they shouldn't be tied to a number. You are making life style changes and creating new habits. Of course, you should celebrate a weight loss milestone. Think about a sexy dress that you want or a piece of jewelry. Or a 90 min massage. The sky's the limit!

I rewarded myself with new clothes and massages at my favorite spa.

Being thin was/is its own reward!

You will probably need some new clothes. For me, the thrill of buying clothes in a smaller size was a huge reward and motivator to keep going.

I've done WW and it just aggravated me. If you do a medial weight loss program like a meal replacement, just make sure you do it right. Getting to the ketosis state when your body burns fat stores requires a high protein intake and you should be monitored closely. The thing is, it works, it totally works. I wasn't hungry, didn't crave sweets, nothing like that. I also had weekly group sessions that helped immensely. I found the additional clinical knowledge empowering.

Do you know what the GW program is called?

while having big goals and timeliens is good I also think you need to be realisistic. Setting a goal to lose x by y can sometime set you up for dissapointment and be discouraging. You can't always control how quickly weight will come off and despite doing everything right there are some weeks when you just stall.

I think you can do what you set your mind to but also be realistic and set smaller goals that you can control, like eating a veggie at every meal or exercising 5 days per week.

How did you lose the weight? I'm almost exactly as your stats and I've been having a terribly rough time. I've gone from 120 to 114 but it took 6 months just to lose that and now the weight won't budge. I've been doing a combo of diet and exercise. I'd like to get down to 104 although 98 was the "normal" for me for most of my life but I just feel like it would be impossible now.

I thought it would be impossible, too, so don't stress. I really credit my weight loss to acupuncture.

That's interesting, where did you go? Did you just ask for a treatment specifically for weight loss? I've done a few months of acupuncture before for back and shoulder pain. But never thought to ask for weight loss help.

My neighbor lost 83 pounds in 12 months in her 40s by doing Medifast. Saturday morning weigh ins.

I asked for hormone balancing and weight loss. I'd give you my doc's name if I didn't have to post it publicly.

That seems like a lot of weight to lose in short time. I would focus on getting healthy habits for life. I lost 30 lbs but about 1 lb per month by eating correct amount at every meal. Not a lot of exercise but some. That was 10 years ago and i'm still maintaining that weight.

No idea. It was a couple years ago. The one I did at Inova is part of their Bariatric program. Several patients need to drop some weight and develop positive habits before undergoing surgery. Maybe GW has a Bariatric program as well?
