Would a child named Rory be teased with "whorey"?

Rory is a boy's name. On Gilmore Girls it was the girl's nickname.

I have known countless Rorys in my life (both boys and girls). The first one I met in first grade. I have never thought of "whorey" in association with the name.

What's your explanation for Rory Kennedy? Or the two 34 year old women I know named Rory?

^^ Simple - their mothers gave them a male name. The name means 'red king', what is there to debate?

Just raise your child to not be a whore and it won't be a problem. Love the name, for either a boy OR a girl.

I like the name, but long-term don't think it fits on a guy any more and so prefer it as a girl's name.

ANY name can be mocked if the kids involved are creative and mean enough.

Girl in my class as a kid named Tamika. Queen Bee in the class called her Tam-tampon.

See?

Well, I had not thought of that nickname in the past, but I'm pretty sure that, from now on, everyone I encounter named "rory", will be referred to as "rory-whorey"

thanks!!

I just read a book where a character was named Aurora, and her nickname was Rory.

Team either a boy or a girl name.

Seems to me to be a boy's name for the Brits and a female nn for Americans.

In 2011, Rory was the given name of 411 baby boys (putting it at #598 for boys) and 287 baby girls (#900 for girls).

I went to school with a girl named Rory (a century ago) and I never heard her called that.

If you have to ask...

Yes, it is possible that a child will be teased with any rhymes that come from his name, and someone on the playground will inevitably think of this. Some names are particularly unfortunate. But Rory is not that bad, and even if you did find a completely neutral name, determined kids will find a way to tease based on something else (e.g. Chubby Wubby). If you love the name, you shouldn't let this stop you.
