Exactly. When we dine out, it is not to simply fill our bellies with some greasy food. So compared to where we normally eat Papa John's and China King is cheap. However compared to what I normally make at home that includes fresh vegetables and often organic meat-carry out food is very expensive. I make my own pizza and often top it with fresh herbs, goat cheese, and procuitto and even then it's still cheaper than Pizza Delivery. |
Exactly. The question was "is it inexpensive?" My answer. No. Because, compared with other equally "nutritious foods (pasta = crust, sauce and cheese + other ingredients, including veggies or meat - the pizza still costs more. Pizza is basically jarred (or more likely canned) tomato sauce on dough. How is it so different? I happen to love both pizza and baked ziti. It also would take you less time to make the baked ziti than it would take you to go out and pick up a pizza. |
I consider pizza to be inexpensive, but we also purchase high quality ingredients. Last night, we had organic roasted broccoli ($5), heritage breed pork chops ($20), organic tomatoes for dinner. When we order pizza, we spend about $20-25, which is about what we spend on dinner last night but I didn't have to cook or clean up. Win Win. |
| Pizza is inexpensive in terms of eating out. Chinese food isn't. But yes, overall it'd be less expensive to cook at home. |
| "Cheap" -no but inexpensive, yes. There's a difference. I find pizza and Chinese are not expensive, certainly won't break the bank, but aren't necessarily the cheapest thing you can eat either. |
| I consider them inexpensive, compared to eating at a nicer restaurant, which we would usually choose to do on the occasions that we eat out. |
We eat in a smilar fashion, except I cut corners by buying my meat in bulk and growing garden of items we eat regularly (tomatoes, broccoli, chard, brussel sprouts, beets) Also, for meat, we simply don't eat a ton of it. For instance, Sausage is often for flavoring, but does not take the main spotlight on the plate. It takes us a year to eat a half of a pig and 18 months to eat a side of beef. |

My answer to this is that it's not cheap for a food that's primarily a starch. I can do better with pasta and get the same food - starch, sauce, maybe some veggies or meat. I could also do beans and rice or stuffed baked potatoes and get there cheaper.
It is cheaper than many meals containing a good amount of protein and vegetables, less dependent on the starch for calories. I can get under the price of a pizza but not consistently. $8 protein for a family of four, $3 vegetables, $3 for salad. |
This answer is strangely scientific. Id love to learn more about ur families eating habits! |
How do you measure how long it takes you to eat a half pig or a sidd beef? Ive never heard anyone say this before. |
I assume that they have a deep freeze and buy higher-quality meat in bulk. When I was a kid in the country, we bought pork "a half pig" at a time. Which doesn't mean we had half a carcass lying around. It came prepared/ butchered, but that was how you referred to the quantity. |
Back off, |
1.Some people like baked ziti. 2.Some people like jarred tomato sauce ( Rao's is particularly good imo), 3.Not sure what "my time is worth money" has to do with this question. 4. You sound like a very unpleasant person to share any meal with. |
1. Yes, but what does that have to do with what *I* like? Why would you suggest I replace food my family enjoys with something we all think is unpalatable, just because it's cheaper? 2. Ok, but it's not cheap. ($4-5 per jar, I think?) And it certainly does not count as a vegetable. 3. It takes me 90 seconds to order pizza delivery. It takes me over an hour to walk to the store, buy groceries, and prepare even the simplest meal. I count my time as part of the cost of any food. 4. That's fair. Though completely irrelevant to the discussion. |
| Actually, Rao's is 8 or 9 dollars, I think. Anyway, to answer OP's question, I guess it depends on the context. I will say we cut out our weekly pizza or Chinese delivery when I was in unpaid maternity leave ... |
