You are so full of it, it seems useless to try to explain how ignorant you are. |
School isn't meant to be a babysitter. And, as a PP mentioned, everything is based on the bus schedule. In MoCo, HS busses start at 6:20. MS busses come at 7:08.! ES busses come at 8:30. I definitely don't want my little ones standing outside at 6:20 or 7:08. It's hard enough to accept a 6th grader outside before the sun comes up. And, before care is far less than daycare. |
There are many schools in NY that start after 9AM - this is not unique to MD |
Troll. |
LMAO!!!! |
"normal jobs"?? What an ass.. |
How so? Normal jobs are 9-5 more or less thats pretty well established |
I'm not sure why everyone is slamming the OP. I agree that 9:15 is late to start school and creates problems for working parents. Why isn't he entitled to verbalize this? |
What was your childcare situation before now? I can't imagine any daycare centers open before 7, or any nannies willing to arrive before 7 either. An au pair could be a good solution if you have room in your house. |
Our family has two working parents, so I get the frustration of the OP. But it's a little absurd to be so shocked about this 3 weeks before school starts, and even more ridiculous to know why the world hasn't risen up to protest when most people like the OP herself don't really care unless/until it affects them.
OP, most of us find a way to make it work - stagger schedules, use beforecare, work out a deal with a neighbor. Bus rides tend to build in more time than you'd guess - our 5 minute ride to school generally meant the kids got on the bus a half hour before the 915 bell. It's not ideal, but life goes on, and as the PPs suggest, there isn't necessarily an ideal alternative either. My kids get up at the crack of dawn so I would have been thrilled to get them on an earlier bus, but that's not the case for a lot of their friends. And I don't think I would like little ones standing at the busstop like the HS school students who get picked up before 7am each day (in the dark for much of the year!) For the most part teenagers should sleep later, but that's not necessarily easy to accomplish. If I remember correctly, one of the NoVA counties or cities tried to switch things around a few years ago, and the families of older kids blocked it - the kids need/want the early afternoon dismissals because the burden of homework and extracurriculars and, gasp, for some families PT jobs. Point is, it's all complicated, and there are a lot of considerations beyond the personal convenience of any of us. |
For me, it was the tone OP took -- kind of like "how dare the school system do this to ME?" It is just a few weeks before school starts, you'd have thought even parents of new students would have worked out a plan to handle all of this by now. Bahaha...just wait until OP realizes how many random days off his child will have, at least in MoCo! I'm sure that was also an evil plan to screw up his life, as well ![]() |
Yes, yes, yes. You have golden hammer that hit the nail on the head. Thank you. |
A problem with many posters is they read way too far into posts and pull something that was clearly not stated. The post is not a "how dare you do it to Me". As another posted stated its more of a how does this make sense to EVERY parent who works a 9 to 5. If if was just something I thought was a personnel issue I would have never posted. The fact that this post is appearing a few weeks before school starts is due to a drastic change in circumstances where initially DC was not going to be attending MC schools. Posters should spend less time guessing why or why not a post has been made a more time addressing the question/dilemna presented. It doesn't matter when the issue is brought up if its one that affects many parents and ways can be looked at to help the posters situation. Which I'm guessing is the true PURPOSE of these boards. I've already seen the list of days off which I'm sure is also a problem with many parents however, its less of an issue than this one which affects every single day of a parents life. |
I'm not trolling. Most families have a parent home. This is the normal order of things. |
7:50 where we are. |
