So ashamed of my parents

Young people who are not liberal have no heart, and older people who are not conservative have no brain. trust me, they learned something over the years. they have stood in a lot of long government lines and know how easily the best intentioned government program quickly gets fucked up and turns into a huge waste. they have seen the effect of welfare spending.

How about the hijab thing? We are a society that tolerates the public marches of the freaking KKK. Talk about putting crazy ideas into people's heads. Yet we all would defend that as free speech. And muslim women should be denied the freedom to wear certain articles of clothing?????

I don't know what a hijib is. Is that the veil over the face? I think it disgusting that a religion thinks women are so low as to not even let their face be shown, but so long as it is the free will of the women in their own homes, etc., then I am ok with it. But they shouldn't wear veils while driving or when walking the streets for other reasons.

They definately should cut you out of their will. You don't need it, are a jerk and it's probably a lot of money.

Funny how discriminating you are about crazy. Oh THAT one is looney tunes, but the rest is true! Okaaaaay...

I actually, in the past, have always enjoyed a lively debate with them. But either they are becoming more shrill or I am pushing back more in my old age (40s) and they don't like being challenged.

Well, ok, be that as it may, but it doesn't seem like either of you are enjoying the debate at this point, so it would probably make sense to stay away from political topics and focus on less contentious issues. You may not like their views, but they're your parents, and presumably you love them and they love you, so why not just stick to conversation topics that won't get everyone upset.

Maybe you should learn a little more about hijab before you bash it. It's a waste of emotion to get all disgusted about something when most of your facts are wrong.

Hijab is a head scarf and covers the hair. It's generally accepted by most Muslims to be Islamic. Niqab is the face veil and historically has not been mandated by Islam. It is mandated in countries like Saudi Arabia, but that's a law of men, not religion.

Women here wear it because of freedom of religion, not freedom of speech. It's necessary to protect freedom of religion as much as possible, even for the religions you might hate. So for now a woman can wear niqab while walking down the street. There have been court rulings that forbid niqab for drivers licence pictures, because driving is a privilege, not a right.

I hate niqab too, but please don't blame it on religion. Most Muslim women, by far, never wear it.

I never bashed the scarf. I said i was disgusted by the veil, but not too worried about it either way.

Women wear it b/c the religion claims that men cannot help themselves and will become tempted should they see a woman's face - and other body parts.

As a woman, it's absolutely horrifying to have to accept that. And while I respect their desire to continue on with that charade, I do not respect the reasons behind it. Once again, women are victims of ridiculous beliefs.

So we tolerate this in the US but have issues with Catholicism?

What in the hell is the difference?

I'm very liberal in most regards and I can't stand to see women wearing those coverings in the U.S. I'm a "when in Rome" kind of person and I would never go to a country that required me to where that stuff. I don't want to see it here in the U.S. It offends my sense of justice for women. If they are so set on wearing it...they should go back to where it is worn. Even Turkey banned the getups...so did Paris.

But "offends your sense of justice".... is that a good enough reason to deny someone their freedom of religious expression? I hate it too but let's pretend I also hate the part of the Catholic Mass where they pretend to turn bread and wine into - HUMAN FLESH AND BLOOD! And then - they EAT it!!! That's horrifying! It's mock cannibalism! What if they like it so much they start using REAL human flesh, maybe from small children???

Obviously I am being ridiculous but you get the point.

Also, the French Republic was FOUNDED on the absence of religion. Not freedom of religion. They wanted to eradicate religion, at least in their public spaces, because they saw it as backwards, divisive, ignorant and damaging. Turkey is afraid of the resurgence of islamic fundamentalism. Turkey states in their constitution that they are a secular country and they place certain restrictions on religion. Hardly apt comparisons to a country founded on LIBERTY.

I actually, in the past, have always enjoyed a lively debate with them. But either they are becoming more shrill or I am pushing back more in my old age (40s) and they don't like being challenged. They are a CEO and VP of a company and they are used to being treated as a formidable pair, not questioned (and demonstrated to be in the wrong) by a "kid". I mean a person shouldn't exercise their religious freedom because it makes someone else "uncomfortable". Seriously????

Awwww... poor little rich girl, rebelling against mummy and daddy's political views. I guess simply changing the subject, keeping your trap shut or replying with a disinterested 'Hmmm" or "isn't that interesting" never occurred to you?

Absolutely there's a fine line. Do we even go as far as to categorize which is worse? the burqa, the hijab or the sheitel/tichel worn by Hasidic women? What's the difference after all? Each has a right to practice religion in a safe environment, right?

It is interesting, however, to note that no one is going after the Orthodox or Hasidic female when their belief system (women being modest, that is) is similar to Islam beliefs. Is it only b/c of the tragedy of 9-11?

It's complex.

Personally, I find this practice revolting. My poor colleague, (a PhD in physics) who was in an arranged marriage to an important figure in the Muslim community, divorced him after he beat her. When she was single, we had some in depth conversations about her faith, and she basically stated that "covering" (as in hijab) was a way for her to look inward - to focus on what's really important. At the time, I was too afraid to ask why it wasn't AS important for men to focus inward, too. Now remarried with a child, she is now refusing to even cover.

OP Did you ever stop to think that your parents may be ashamed of you, too, not because of your political views but because of your narrow-minded inability to respect someone's right to hold an opinion different than your own?
