Among the gems this weekend:
The hijab shouldn't be allowed because it makes non-muslim people uncomfortable to have to look at it. And American men will get their minds poisoned that this is a good idea for non-muslim American women too. We shouldn't force Catholics to allow birth control on the health care plans, not because of religious freedom, but because religious people can be really crazy and what if they all go armed revolution on us. Obama is a despot for refusing to enfoce DOMA and immigration laws. Imagine their surprise when I pointed out that other Presidents have also refused to enforce laws, and cited this article that mentions Scalia affirming this (Bush Era) http://www.justice.gov/olc/nonexcut.htm "Well that's different because it's Signing Statements". See more here. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/07/23/AR2006072300511.html I responded that if a President illegally oversteps his bounds and violates the constitution, I expect him to be impeached, pronto. Even if it's Obama. I am simply withholding judgment until a constitutional scholar(s) lets us know whether this particular refusal is not consistent with precedent. When I also responded that I sometimes feel like people get really worked up about these things because it's the black guy doing it. For eample, I don't recall the same level of hysteria when Bush invoked executive privelege to refuse to hand over documents. They were outraged. OUTRAGED. That I could even contemplate such a thing. MSNBC, they said, refuses to cover Fast and Furious. When I showed them several google hits relating to msnbc and F&F, well that didn't count. Nevermind Obamacare. FROTHING AT THE MOUTH. "Rationing"! All us rich people wille to fly to Bangladesh for the care that the US govt will refuse - and even make ILLEGAL in the US. I am horrified. These are educated, generally nice, responsible people. Note to self, no more discussing politics. |
Well my parents hold similar views but unlike yours they really aren't educated and I expect this kind of thing from them. They are older in their late 70's and I hold no hope they will change their opinions. |
One has a masters. The other is one of the most widely read people I know. Unfortunately they are wealthy. Which I guess explains everything ![]() |
This is your brain on Fox. |
![]() Any questions? |
Yes, OP, I think your best bet is to use this PP's strategy. Accept that you can't change your parents and avoid talking politics with them. Easy for me to say, I know, but I had to learn this with my mom - not about politics but other things. Sorry you have to go through this! |
My mother rants about the foreigners that come to her small town and take advantage of the system. Mostly the Bosnians that went to the food pantry for free canned goods. They were undeserving! We can NEVER talk politics. I might smack her, or her me. |
*she me. |
well your parents are right about everything except the Catholic-bashing.
Young people who are not liberal have no heart, and older people who are not conservative have no brain. trust me, they learned something over the years. they have stood in a lot of long government lines and know how easily the best intentioned government program quickly gets fucked up and turns into a huge waste. they have seen the effect of welfare spending. |
How about the hijab thing? We are a society that tolerates the public marches of the freaking KKK. Talk about putting crazy ideas into people's heads. Yet we all would defend that as free speech. And muslim women should be denied the freedom to wear certain articles of clothing????? |
Why don't you just tell them that you don't want to talk about politics and change the subject? |
They failed by raising an idiot. |
I actually, in the past, have always enjoyed a lively debate with them. But either they are becoming more shrill or I am pushing back more in my old age (40s) and they don't like being challenged. They are a CEO and VP of a company and they are used to being treated as a formidable pair, not questioned (and demonstrated to be in the wrong) by a "kid". I mean a person shouldn't exercise their religious freedom because it makes someone else "uncomfortable". Seriously???? |
Would you mind if they cut you out if the will? |
No, I have my own money. However they probably can't disinherit me since I have a severly special needs sibling- who by the way, gets medicare/social security! Talk about nanny state. |
