well your parents are right about everything except the Catholic-bashing. Young people who are not liberal have no heart, and older people who are not conservative have no brain. trust me, they learned something over the years. they have stood in a lot of long government lines and know how easily the best intentioned government program quickly gets fucked up and turns into a huge waste. they have seen the effect of welfare spending.
How about the hijab thing? We are a society that tolerates the public marches of the freaking KKK. Talk about putting crazy ideas into people's heads. Yet we all would defend that as free speech. And muslim women should be denied the freedom to wear certain articles of clothing?????
I don't know what a hijib is. Is that the veil over the face? I think it disgusting that a religion thinks women are so low as to not even let their face be shown, but so long as it is the free will of the women in their own homes, etc., then I am ok with it. But they shouldn't wear veils while driving or when walking the streets for other reasons.
Maybe you should learn a little more about hijab before you bash it. It's a waste of emotion to get all disgusted about something when most of your facts are wrong. Hijab is a head scarf and covers the hair. It's generally accepted by most Muslims to be Islamic. Niqab is the face veil and historically has not been mandated by Islam. It is mandated in countries like Saudi Arabia, but that's a law of men, not religion. Women here wear it because of freedom of religion, not freedom of speech. It's necessary to protect freedom of religion as much as possible, even for the religions you might hate. So for now a woman can wear niqab while walking down the street. There have been court rulings that forbid niqab for drivers licence pictures, because driving is a privilege, not a right. I hate niqab too, but please don't blame it on religion. Most Muslim women, by far, never wear it.
Women wear it b/c the religion claims that men cannot help themselves and will become tempted should they see a woman's face - and other body parts. As a woman, it's absolutely horrifying to have to accept that. And while I respect their desire to continue on with that charade, I do not respect the reasons behind it. Once again, women are victims of ridiculous beliefs. So we tolerate this in the US but have issues with Catholicism? What in the hell is the difference?
