I'm very liberal in most regards and I can't stand to see women wearing those coverings in the U.S. I'm a "when in Rome" kind of person and I would never go to a country that required me to where that stuff. I don't want to see it here in the U.S. It offends my sense of justice for women. If they are so set on wearing it...they should go back to where it is worn. Even Turkey banned the getups...so did Paris.
But "offends your sense of justice".... is that a good enough reason to deny someone their freedom of religious expression? I hate it too but let's pretend I also hate the part of the Catholic Mass where they pretend to turn bread and wine into - HUMAN FLESH AND BLOOD! And then - they EAT it!!! That's horrifying! It's mock cannibalism! What if they like it so much they start using REAL human flesh, maybe from small children??? Obviously I am being ridiculous but you get the point. Also, the French Republic was FOUNDED on the absence of religion. Not freedom of religion. They wanted to eradicate religion, at least in their public spaces, because they saw it as backwards, divisive, ignorant and damaging. Turkey is afraid of the resurgence of islamic fundamentalism. Turkey states in their constitution that they are a secular country and they place certain restrictions on religion. Hardly apt comparisons to a country founded on LIBERTY.
