Komen's DC Race for the Cure is down 40%

First of all, I am pro-choice. Second, it is clear that most of you have completely bought the planned Parenthood PR campaign. However, I do feel compelled to point out that the reason given by Komen for stopping funding to Planned Parenthood was that PP does not provide breast cancer screenings. Not one single PP facility nationwide provides mammography services. In other words, Komen was paying PP overhead, just so they could refer women to other providers for breast cancer screenings. Komen made the decision that it would be a better use of their funds to pay those providing breast cancer screenings directly. PP was the one who claimed that the decision was based on an anti-abortion agenda. Why would they do that? Because they knew that they could generate public outrage that would force Komen to reverse itself, or at a minimum, generate publicity that would harm Komen and help their own fundraising. It worked. The press, and posters here, now dutifully report that the controversy was over abortion. Komen still provides funding, and, as far as I know,

PP here -- sorry -- meant to conclude: and as far as I know, it continues to be true that no Planned Parenthood facility actually provides abortion services.

My plea: please, in the future, don't believe everything you read in a newspaper, much less on line. Just because you agree with the goals of an organization, do not blindly believe that their motives are always pure.

Oops -- sorry, it's late -- meant to say that no PP facility provides mammography services.

It is also true that planned parent hood doesn't provide mammograms, the only approved and reimbursable breast cancer screening method, I guess there will be a surge in pro choice breast cancer, lol

sorry, but total nonpolitical poster here: then what is the point of pp if they don't provide the anti-breast cancer treatment/screening they purport to offer? (?????)

^^ They provide clinical breast exams/screening.

Mammograms aren't even recommended until age 40, and there's some debate about starting then as a screening tool.

You are not telling the truth. Their stated reason was the congressional investigation of PP.

The real reason is that the catholic church was pulling its funding of Komen.

You know what? Unless you are a survivor, you don't get to say that. I am a survivor. I don't support Komen. I haven't supported Komen for years because of their poor governance. I took no pleasure in the PP debacle, but I am gratified that the curtain was pulled back on an organization that meant well but really didn't do that well.

Exactly!
Politics aside, this organization was giving very little money to the actual cause and I just can't support that.

At 60% the executives can still draw their salaries and fly first class. I bet they will have some "layoffs" and still be able to donate money to the GOP.

1. Komen dug their own grave.

2. There are other advocacy orgs, research efforts and service providers. We don't need a pass through organization to support them.

3. I appreciate the awareness the pink ribbon has brought to the cause. However, some of the products you see with pink ribbons, i.e. foods loaded with crap are part of the problem.

So I say let your conscious be your guide.

I agree with this.

There's a lot of misinformation in these posts.

My reason for not supporting Komen is what came up in the aftermath of the PP issue. They hired some leadership that was closely aligned with conservative social groups and actively opposed PP specifically because of abortion.

So the idea that this was just pulling funding because they weren't actually providing mammograms is a lie told by Komen to cover their tracks.

I will not support them because I believe there are real and legitimate concerns that my money would support conservative causes that I am adamantly opposed to.
