More Catholic pissing on women....

The RC is chasing out its liberal members, and could care less. Should why should we?

My family used to be Catholic, now we're atheists. I don't know of many educated Catholics who actually hold with the dogma, either.

You know the church is growing both here in the US and worldwide?

Were you "educted" at a Catholic school, by chance?

Serious question, do other religions have nuns? Because if so I think I'd go be nun for some guys who are't quite so horrible. Just sayin.

This is just so sad and shows how mysogynistic and threatened the old Vatican guard is feeling. I'm Catholic too and am thankful to have found a local church and priests who place emphasis on Jesus' tolerance and compassion for others, above all else. But I've lost faith in the bureaucrats at the Vatican dictating their screwy backwards beliefs which are NOT part of Jesus' teachings.

I agree. They feel threatened. It's pathetic. I am really trying hard not to leave the Catholic Church and they just keep making it more difficult. Attacking American Catholic nuns-- this is really outrageous. I think this exposes not only the problem the Vatican has with women (which is long standing) but also the threat they feel from American democracy and the American political system.

What can Catholics do to support and stand with the women religious of our church, who teach us, work in our hospitals, care for immigrants, the poor, orphans? What can we do to express our solidarity with them? I am just so disgusted. The Vatican threatening nuns. Shame on them. They hide pedophiles and turn around and the women religious of the church. It makes me ill.

This is not a church that's acting like Jesus.

Because the American catholic church will go into steep decline. Right now the growth through the Hispanic population is masking an erosion. With time that will change and then the bottom drops out.

The two places the church loses are young single people and at intermarriage. Young people are finding it harder to accept church doctrine and even if they can, their fiancées can't. you can sell yourself the story that the state of young Catholics is young and vibrant and your Nrwman Center has never been busier. But 25 years ago a catholic and Protestant would marry and become a catholic family. This is becoming way less common. And it gets harder and harder if Catholics become more of a minority.

The nuns are part of the catholic church too, and they also represent it whether or not they have the bureaucracy's support. So I'm actually of two minds about this (I'm Episcopalian, FWIW). Although the bureaucracy seems backwards and reprehensible, I admire the nuns a great deal, and they too are part of the church's "face."

I could not agree more.

I posted earlier about this, I have decided to stop giving any money to the church. Perhaps I will write a note giving my reasons and place that in my collection envelope (not that it will make a difference). Instead I will be giving my money directly to Network, or to the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. I am sure there are many other options as well that you could donate to as a show of support. I wish there was something more I could do, the Church under Ratzinger is becoming something I don't even recognize.

Great posts of late here - first knocking on the LDS religion, then Catholics. What religious group is next on the docket of DCUM hatred I wonder. Now go grab Bubba and go hoggin'

That's a good idea. I'd like to donate directly to Network & the Leadership Conference too. I just wonder how much control they actually have over that money. Thinking of these men in robes in Rome publicly threatening and embarrassing groups of women religious consecrated to Christ and dedicated to social justice is so unattractive, so unappealing. Reasonable Catholics, conservative and progressive alike, should not be silent in the face of these attacks.

We're not hating on Catholics. We're expressing our deep disappointment and disillusionment with an out of touch Catholic hierarchy that would publicly and without warning attack American nuns for supposedly being too focused on feeding the hungry and clothing the poor (which is mandated by Christ) and not focused enough on being a mouthpiece for the Vatican's hardline views.

Actually, Mormons and Catholics seem to be the only targets for a small number of DCUMers. They leave all other religions alone. I wish Ratzinger would go away, he offends my feminist principles. But I wish the DCUM haters would go away, too, and I'm not talking about the concerned, self-identified Catholics who are posting here. Ironically, it's not rednecks who are doing the hateful bashing, it's people who think of themselves as sophisticated and thoughtful. But it seems everybody needs to make themselves feel good by hating somebody else....

Why oh why do women want to be part of a group that hates women? This is like those who secretly want to be part of the mainstream who hate and dehumanize them. Women need to form their own religion where they characterize the teachings of Jesus as having males inferior and subservient to females. See how many males will join that.

It's not a matter of *wanting* to be part of the group. I absolutely don't agree with much of what the Church is saying today, but renounce my Catholicism over it? No. The Church will change eventually, because its current level of misogyny is unsustainable for much longer in today's world.
