What in the world was wrong with my comment? The OP asked if she could go preppy and for suggestions for looks. I don't have any suggestions for stores or brands, but I stated that I think it's a nice style that I see worn by many fat women. Why are you referring to women as 'bitches' and saying they dress like sluts? I think that's uncalled for, unless you just enjoy being misogynistic. |
The word "fat" is loaded. "Fat" is relative. There's a world of difference between a size 14 and a size 24. Some women don't think of themselves as particularly fat at a size 14, others do. So I think people were objecting to your casual use of the of the F word. FWIW, according to statistics, the average American woman is a size 14. |
And if the average size continues increasing over the next few decades and size 24 is the new average, would that no longer be considered fat? The word fat was used as a description, not an insult. I didn't say it looks good on "fatties" (which would be insulting), I said it looks nice on fat women, just like I might remark that a certain pant style looks nice on tall women. Thanks for letting me know what the objections were about. I think it's sad that the PP got so bent out of shape about my use of the descriptive word such as 'fat', but then went on to use inarguably sexist, derogatory language in a tangential response to my post. I do think the preppy style looks nice on fat women, and I think the PP at 21:18 shouldn't care about the shallow people who'd have a problem with her wearing white jeans. I don't think most people who are secure with themselves would have a problem seeing a woman in properly-fitting white pants. |
I'm the PP you just quoted. You're right that the PP who took objection to your initial post was over the top. The fact is that the word "fat" is so weighted (no pun intended) and has such negative connotations that your use of it as a descriptor was deemed objectionable. Adding "ties" (as in "fatties" as you stated) doesn't make it worse; it's already bad. I know it's ridiculous but that's the way it is. If you used "overweight" or "plus size" instead, I don't think people would have freaked out. And I'm speaking as an overweight woman here (size 16/18). I one used "fat" to describe myself. I was with a friend and her 10 year old daughter at the time. My friend later chastised me, asking for me to refrain using "bad words" around her daughter. It's just gotten to that point. I really think the word "fat" needs to be liberated from shame. |
| Smiley face is supposed to be the number eight. Don't know why it showed up instead. |
Thanks for your civil responses to me in this thread.
I do hope that the word "fat" is liberated from shame, as you say. And any time an "8" is placed directly next to ) on DCUM, it'll turn into 8). It's part of the board code. |
| NP here. You may as well have said "Of course you could pull it off dear. You have such a pretty face." |
| Another NP, the use of fat was offensive, unnecessary, and condescending. The word can be used, but not like that. |
In what manner can the word fat be used that is not offensive, unnecessary, and condescending? |
Agree that it was offensive. And combine that with the fact that the poster just said it's okay for fat people to wear preppry clothes without actually answering the OPs questions about where to shop indicates that all she wanted to do was make a rude comment about people who are size 14. |
One of OP's three questions was "can I go preppy?" The comment answered that question. Really, a handful of posters in this thread are much too sensitive for the internet. How do you survive in the real world if the word "fat" breaks you down? |
|
OP-I am a plus size. I have found Talbots has nice fitting jeans, blazers and sweaters. Nordstrom sales Foxcroft button down shirts. They fit amazingly well.
My advice is to make sure everything fits. If you are busting out of your clothes-it is not flattering. Also, if the clothes are too big-again not flattering. A tailor is great for taking the waist in or shortening pants. Good luck! |
| Since when is size 14 a plus size? It is a regular size found in misses clothing, not in "women's" clothing. 14 is not fat. |

If you want a classic preppy look, lands end does have some great quality basics at really good prices. Their sizes are generous. I am a size 14 and generally wear xl everwhere, but I am solidly a large at lands ends. You will of need plus sizes there.
I love their twinsets, cotton cable sweaters and cardigans. I like that their pants come standard with a custom hem as well. |
According to most posters on DCUM, size 14 is obese. Haven't you seen all the antifat threads? There's even one on Off Topic that keeps cropping up. Most of the posters on that one insist that size 12 is huge. |
