I think her long-time boyfriend does though and this may be what PP is referring to. |

Banneker is an established school which is highly focused on college preparation and acceptance. McKinley is a newer magnet school, has more focus on preparing students for a variety of post-secondary options besides college, and recently has gone through some turbulence.
I have to admit I have not investigated McKinley as closely as I did Banneker (McKinley was just getting started when dd was applying to magnet schools) so I could be wrong about this. But in my experience Banneker is highly regarded compared to McKinley. -- not necessarily on DCUM because a some white people on DCUM are uncomfortable with the idea of sending their kids to a school that is so heavily African-American but then they aren't sending their kids to McKinley either. DCUMers who send their kids to public schools are more likely to prefer School without Walls or to Wilson. Personally I would go with Banneker. If your child doesn't like it, then try a move to McKinley, Walls, or Wilson. Good luck! |
17:46 again. I just remembered that my daughter did not pass the exam for Walls either (really annoying that they use an exam for a cut off) but later on in the spring she was invited in for an interview and was accepted. So if it is of any interest to you, she may be invited later. Now that I think about it, when dd applied, Banneker got their act together early. Compared to the other schools, they were impressively organized. (Dd got to the interview stage at Banneker but not past it. I was sorry she didn't make it in but she wasn't and the committee clearly picked up on her feelings.) It was later in the spring when she heard from the Humanities Magnet program at Wilson. Ellington was the latest. She got the acceptance call from them the same day she was shadowing at Walls after having been accepted. Okay, this all is to say that the other schools (if you have applied to them) may still be getting their act together. If it were me, I would take the Banneker offer and wait to see what else happens. |
| 14:40, you're not correct the Chancellor has stated publicly that her child attends McKinley. Although not her biological child but nonetheless it is one she recognizes. Here's a wet wipe to get that egg off your face, sweetie. |
No egg on my face. She's not married to her BOYFRIEND. I recently left a high level position with the schools. Not once did she refer to the kid as hers. Sorry! |
| 8:46, look at fox-tv news and research a former interview segment. She clearly states about her "children" and about the one who attends McKinley. Yeah, the head custodian is a high position and I am indeed impressed. What in the hell does her boyfriend and marriage have to do with your response. Just leave the egg on your face!!! |
So, if the Chancellor biological kids attend Tech ( that's what old school Washingtonians used to call it) then the school is excellent. But, if she loves and adores her boyfriends children, then school is not that impressive. I'm confused. McKiinley is on the rise and Banneker is one of the better schools in the area. Wilson and Walls are not the only public Sr. High schools in DC. |
| OP I was a non-athletic HS nerd, AP sciences, physics club, drama, debate...ended up at a great college, where I started out in biology and eventually changed major to poli sci. I am white I would def. consider sending my DD to Banneker if she felt comfortable there. When looking at DC schools, you might also consider Washington Latin, it's a charter, and maybe go take a look at EL Haynes, which is building a new expansion. |

Banneker is one of the better schools but McKinley is one of the better rounded schools in the city.
12:22; this feeling of being comfortable couldn't mean that if she wasn't the only White student in attendance at a majority African-American student population of smart kids that she would have pursued her public education? Where do we get these people from...where is White America? Mocha Moms, help!!!! |

Okay, let me clear this up Chancellor Henderson does not have biological children. Yet, she does have an affinity for her boyfriend's children and one child attends McKinley. The choice of McKinley was of the custodian parent and that is what it is all about.
A popular school is not always the best school. Quite, frankly Banneker dodged a bullet. The school that you don't want just might not want you. We all know what happened when Rhee selected her children's school, didn't that principal get fired? McKinley's principal was recently under hot water and I would think that that he wasn't to pleased at FIRST to know that a student of his, has the ear of the Chancellor. |
| Henderson live in boyfriend has two kids one 14 and one 5 they both attend DCPS the oldest one lives with them because his school is closer to their house. His name is Robert. There y'all go. |
Trust me, I wasn't the custodian. The last time I checked, you have to be married to your boyfriend in order for his kids to be yours. I haven't heard that she adopted them. |
| I know lots of impressive kids who attend McKinley. Unfortunately, I don't like the way the kids act on the Metro and their general demeanor. Sorry. They act like hoodlums. BTW - I'm black. I really like Banneker. The only thing that sucks is their very old facility. |
| You know what 23:58, you are between a prude and a troll. If it takes a village to raise the child, then consider yourself the village idiot. My mistake you're the new hybrid of prolls that have been created. |
You have problems. Go get a life. It's not that deep. Taking it a little personally aren't you? |
