I am a DC transplant from NY so I have no inside knowledge of the specialized school other than their stats on paper. My daughter was accepted to Mckinley and Banneker...what is the best choice and why? |
| If your daughter took the test for Banneker and passed, I would choose Banneker. McKinley is a very fine school. If she is scholar/athlete, McKinley is a better choice |
| She did not have to test. She was interviewed and her middle school grades, dc cas scores and ranking were reviewed. |
| Hmm. I would try to apply to School Without Walls or some other schools but if those are the two options I would say Banneker. |
|
She did not score well enough on walls exam. Why Banneker?
|
| Give Walls a rest...they have enough girls. As for the difference of Banneker versus McKinley. Hands down it is McKinley because the Chancellor sends her children to McKinley. |
| I guess McKinley but it's proven that Banneker is the best public school in DC. Banneker doesn't have great sports while McKinley does though. If it was me I would choose McKinley for my son because hes a big athlete. |
| When did you receive your acceptance letter to McKinley? |
| We received this past Saturday. |
| I haven't received yet.... |
| I beg to differ, it depends on the sport. Since you're basing it on the athletic portion. If it is football, then Friendship Academy is the sole winner for over-all scholar athlete. It you're looking a consistent winning then you have a choice of Ballou, Woodson, Dunbar and Coolidge. If it is basketball, then you have Coolidge, McKinley, Wilson and Spingarn. If it is Baseball, you have Wilson and Bell. If it is track and field you have Woodson and Dunbar. If you want a championship quality cheerleading team then it is McKinely and Banneker hands down. |
The Chancellor does not have any kids. The Superintendent's son is in elementary school. I would choose Banneker - no question. Much better college acceptances and their DC-CAS scores are higher than Walls. I'm not sure why people love Walls so much. The only difference is that Walls has a better building and more white kids go there. Apart from that, Banneker has them beat. |
| I would never send my kid to McKinley. I would look at Banneker or School without Walls. |
| Thank-you for all the intelligent responses. As for those who proceeded to speak of sports you need to get your life. I am looking to academically prepare my daughter for the rest of her life. A great sports team is of absolutely no relevance. |
I think they were considering a well rounded student. I graduated from Banneker and attended a excellent college. But, I wished our school had Homecoming or girls tennis and track during my time there. Participating in athletics is not detrimental to a childs academic growth. To the contrary, my son has recieved an academic/ football scholrship. Since you are new to DC, they were just giving you some insight to the various high schools. |
