People who make beds and who don't make beds

I hate when my bed is made because then I have to pull out the covers and rearrange them when I go to bed. It's much better to leave them the way I like them

I could lie and say I do those things for DH, as an example to our kids or a courtesy to guests, but, quite honestly, I do it for myself. I love to cook and our kitchen is really a lovely space to hang out in even when I'm not cooking. It's sunny with great views, so I want it to look and feel nice for me whether I'm cooking, reading the paper or working. Ditto the bed; when I go up to my room at night, I love to settle into a comfortably made bed with clean, crisp and pretty linens. There's nothing nicer than slipping under a cozy quilt to watch a movie or read a book . . . . well, maybe one thing nicer.

This pretty well describes my philosophy and approach too. I like to get into a nice bed at night, so I make it. I like to hang in our kitchen, so I make sure it's cleaned up whenever possible.

But don't get me started on our home office or basement (or my teenage sons' rooms). They really define the word "messy" !

My priority for cleaning is the rooms we spent time in (family room, dining room) and the rooms that can get truley dirty (kitchen/bathroom). Bedrooms thus are a lower priority and bed making is not typically done.

I make my bed every day. I like how it feels getting into a nice, made up bed. However, the rest of my house is a bit messy. Not dirty, just slightly unorganized.

Unmade beds are healthier--because they allow the sheets and mattress to air out between uses. Unless you make your bed with the duvet folded down to expose most of the sheet, you're actually trapping moisture by pulling the duvet over the mattress.

Anyone who makes their beds have too much time on their hands and aren't in a position where they've ever had to choose their battles. Try 2 preteens (one who had cancer at age 7) and an autistic 7 YO. I think after experiencing some challenges in your life, you'll come to understand what is truly important in your life.

That said, I have a housecleaner that comes once every 2 weeks and I LOVE it when SHE makes the beds.

10:17 - LOL! Slob SIL is that you?! That is really funny. Just don't make the bed and don't apologize, but don't make such obvious shit up.

10:22 - I liked your post because it explains many things in life. Those I know with the sunniest dispositions, for example, are those who have had the most truly enormous challenges in their lives - they know what matters and I don't think I have ever heard them judge others. Truly remarkable people.

If you are a guest in someone's house, be considerate and make the bed. If not, who cares? Just don't go snooping to find out, or we will all know you were raised in a barn and proud of it!

So how often do you non-bed-makers change your sheets?

I'm supposed to apologize because I have 2 non special needs children who make their own beds every day?

I've actually heard this too. An unmade bed is a cleaner bed.

I personally am a 50/50 bed maker. I always make it if anyone will be coming to my home. Our kids or cat will always make sure our bedroom door is opened and it's right next to the bathroom.

Our house is very clean. We do not leave dishes in the sink, we change our sheets weekly, our house is swept and dusted regularily, etc.

So, if I actually have a spare minute in the morning I will make it. But, if we are in the least bit rushed it is the first thing on the chopping block.

Our house is messier than I would like for it to be, but beds are made as soon as we get up. This goes for my two kids as well (7 and 4) who must make their bed before they can have breakfast.

Ditto here.

Spoken like a true slob....

I like the sheets to air out. We aren't in the bedroom again until we go to bed. What would be the point of making it?

Wow! I thought DH and I were all alone in the world on this. The only time I make the beds is when we have guests. Our house is clean enough that we won't catch food-borne illnesses of any kind but dirty enough to hopefully build kiddos' immunity and very messy and we could care less. We just have many other priorities than cleaning up.
I do change the sheets once a week or so because otherwise DH's side threatens to become a bit....fragrant.
