Arizona plane crash

Oprah did a show once about a woman who was divorced and lived with her 4 or 5 children. One morning she went out for a walk before waking the kids and getting ready for the day. When she came back she found all of her children shot and killed, still in their beds. The ex-husband shot them all and then I believe he shot himself as well.
The show was about how to move on from such a tragic event. I will never forget her flat affect and saddness. I thought she would probably attempt suicide but when they checked in on her 10 years later she had remarried and had two more children. I'm not so sure I could go on.

How did you reach this conclusion? What an illogical response.

witnesses said the planes engine was cranked up beofre impact, another plane in the area saw it circling and it was headed straight for the mountain withouth any attempt to get out of the way. Did you read the story about it?

The plane's engine revving tells me that the pilot saw the mountain face coming, was trying to get the plane to gain elevation to get over it, and could not do so. The pilot was not even the husband, it was the husband's boss who owned the plane. What a horrible thing to suggest he did it on purpose.

I believe I saw this too, the check up episode, and she admitted that she had made a bargain with herself that she would give things X amount of years to get better and if they hadn't, she would commit suicide. I think the only thing that stopped her was her belief that committing suicide wouldn't reunite her with her children; as painful as it was to continue on, her faith (if I'm remember right, she was Christian) meant that not killing herself was the only way to be reunited with them in the afterlife. I remember her too. I will never be able to fathom the strength it must take for mothers to go on after losing their children.

The father had another child, a three-year-old. It was an accident. Maybe the instruments were giving them the wrong altitude. These things happen. Flying after sundown is always dangerous.

I wondered about whether it might be intentional, too.

Do you assume the same of every parent who gets in a car accident with their children in the car? This is such a cynical outlook.

This is the oddest thing i've read on this board in days. I mean, AS IF! C'mon lady- a little holier than thou are we? Do you preface all your judgemental comments this way?

No, it's really not odd. Christians believe if you commit suicide you cannot enter Heaven. She doesn't mean she's too "good" for suicide or being a Christian makes her above it, she just means that her belief system prohibits her from considering it because she wants to enter Heaven when she dies.

Not PP, but it is odd in that in order to abide by the Christian/suicide statement it implies that a person is in their right mind when chosing suicide. Christians commit suicide all of the time. It doesn't make them any less Christian. It makes them a flawed human. Suicide is much deeper than making a choice to end ones life.

I also thought it might be deliberate. Murder/suicides in families do happen, usually by the dad, and often within the context of a failed or failing marriage. But yes, I am cynical.

This is one of the saddest Oprah episodes I ever saw (as a mother). I, too, will never forget that woman's face and story. Oprah did another show which had a mother and grandmother who were returning home from shopping with their three kids in the minivan. The minivan was stopped in traffic on their exit ramp, and a truck driver came around the bend and rear ended the family. All three kids died (all under the age of 5), and the mother and grandmother survived. Completely horrifying and tragic. Somehow the parents lived on, and several years later the mom gave birth to triplets. I simply can't imagine recovering from that, though.

I read that the topography of the area of the Superstition Mountains is extrememely difficult to navigate. I still cannot imagine the horror and intense loss of having a child (or all) die.

No one said that all people were able to overcome committing the act. I'm a Christian and quite frankly if my children died like this, I would find my faith a burden because I wouldn't be able to release myself from the pain. I would *wish* I could commit suicide, but what would be the purpose if my children are in Heaven and I'm in hell? So, that is what would prevent me from going through with such an act.
