Oprah did a show once about a woman who was divorced and lived with her 4 or 5 children. One morning she went out for a walk before waking the kids and getting ready for the day. When she came back she found all of her children shot and killed, still in their beds. The ex-husband shot them all and then I believe he shot himself as well. The show was about how to move on from such a tragic event. I will never forget her flat affect and saddness. I thought she would probably attempt suicide but when they checked in on her 10 years later she had remarried and had two more children. I'm not so sure I could go on.
I believe I saw this too, the check up episode, and she admitted that she had made a bargain with herself that she would give things X amount of years to get better and if they hadn't, she would commit suicide. I think the only thing that stopped her was her belief that committing suicide wouldn't reunite her with her children; as painful as it was to continue on, her faith (if I'm remember right, she was Christian) meant that not killing herself was the only way to be reunited with them in the afterlife. I remember her too. I will never be able to fathom the strength it must take for mothers to go on after losing their children.
