Over 50--where do you buy clothes?

I think eileen fisher is very chic, and flowy with a "cool", bohemian-vibe.

Eileen Fisher.

I like Brooks Bros for work clothes. I have also gotten some decent things at Ann Taylor for work and casual. I like Boden for casual clothes. St John can be old ladyish but I love the clothes for work and they have a more casual line now too. The stuff fits really well and is flattering. There is an outlet on the other side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge that is worth the trip.

Eileen Fisher doesn't work for me - I like colors and tailored clothing.

Eileen fisher has colors. There are some tailored pieces, along with the flowing.

OP again-- me, too. I miss the old classic Talbots. I'm happy with Lands End and LLBean for casual clothes (although a little boring), but don't know where to go for dressy. Maybe it has changed, but Brooks Bros. always seemed cut for people more slender in the hips than I, even when I was generally slender.

I agree with Nordtroms and Ann Taylor. Also, get things tailored if they need it... Nordstrom's does it in house so you can get fitted right away if you decide you like something.

I don't know at all how to dress for this body type, so I run around in my exercise clothes all day (I work at home). I literally have nothing nice to wear and decline social invitations as a result. If you lare about 50 and, like me, have some weight to lose, where do you buy clothes? I was always a conservative (preppy) dresser, but even Talbots looks wrong on me now. Thanks for advice!

Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Nordstroms, Neiman Marcus, Kohl's, on-line. Talbots would look wrong on anyone at age 50.

J Crew. I think because I like to sew (but have no time for sewing), I'm a sucker for nice Italian and Liberty of London fabrics, and careful tailoring.

After 2 kids, I avoid the low-slung jeans like the plague, but their pants that hit the waist work well on me.

I would, however, wear the Eileen Fisher Foldover Crepe skirt 3x a week with Spanx.

Thanks, I just bought one of these! Hope the 23" length is correct, because I still want to be able to fold over the waistband, but the world doesn't need to see my older knees.

I also associate the drapey look with much older women. If you like that look, however, Pua on 7th Street in Penn Quarter has a lot of drapey/made by foreign artisan outfits.

I really like Garnet Hill (catalogue and not cheap) and contrary to a PP, have found nice things at JJill. True, avoid the baggy, flowing things. JJill's more fitted things and a lot of their dresses are really flattering. I also recently discovered the catalogue Boden, which has really nice dresses as well.

More interested in how you lost the weight, than where you buy the clothes, although I like both of those places. I'm 50 and size 12, used to be size 8-10. Surgical menopause and I can't lose the dang weight.

How often do you exercise?

I'm a bit older than you and have found that the best way for me to maintain weight and/or drop pounds is to walk between 2 to 3 miles at least 5 days a week and eat no carbs or desserts after 5:30 pm or so. I bought a pedometer that helps motivate me. I also work out at a gym three hours a week, but really the walking is what keeps the weight in check. At work, I park my car as far as I can from the building; and I walk as much as I can within the building during the day. Good luck!
