Adults at movie theatres....WHY?

Anonymous
Thanks. I think we are going to start trying Mazza! Also, any insight on the strollers and babies? Not to open an argument on babies in public but really? Why would you bring a baby to a movie theatre. Maybe I mean maybe I would have been ok if as soon as the child started crying they left, but then to stand up in the aisle and fiddle around and yell at other people (who were making comments to them but who would not) it was crazy.

Babies at movie theaters -

I think in the morning and afternoon of less loud non-scary violent movies - ok fine - that's what matinees are for, that's why they're cheaper.
Absolutely not in the evening unless a children's movie. I understand that it's expensive to get a babysitter - truly I do. But don't ruin it for the people who did go to that expense so they could have a nice night out without a baby's crying interrupting the experience. Just my two cents.

I definitely agree with you on babies and evening movies, but not totally on the matinee times. If you have a baby that you know is going to be quiet and not scream/cry/screech/be disruptive, then it's fine. Just because a movie is cheaper it doesn't mean that it's okay to disturb the other people in the theater. I go to the earlier shows because it's a lot cheaper and less crowded. It doesn't mean I want a crying baby as an added soundtrack though.

Yea what's up with the baby thing? I never remember that but now every movie I go too seems to have babies in it. Including the 10:00 showing of shutter island and inglorious bastards. And my DH and I pay a lot to get a sitter so we can have a nice kid free date night. I've just given up and go to the cinema drafthouse in Arlington. They card you at the door.

They used to have a Cinema Draft House in Bethesda and its gone now. It was where the Whitney apts (spelling) are. Is there smoking in the Arlington one? I knew it was there but did not want to go if smoking was allowed inside? I loved going there!

I think the Mazza Gallerie Club Cinema also cards at the door (and has alcohol). I doubt seriously that AFI has any children (and it has alcohol, too.)

Landmark E Street does not have those problems on the whole. Of course that is art house theatre so you're dealing with old farts and hipsters but generally the tone is respectful.

Yeah, I've never experienced any of this but I usually go to Shirlington. No teenagers typically and while a lot of the people there are parents of young kids, I've never seen anyone bring their baby.

I get so depressed when I see people with a little kid (not a sleepy baby) at a late movie, particularly one where there's any sort of unpleasantness. Pre-kids, I remember going to a 9 p.m. showing of Training Day and seeing several little kids, and thinking what the fuck? Now that I have little ones of my own, I find it thoroughly depressing. I have to say, I see most of my movies at the Majestic theater in silver spring and haven't really had problems with people texting during the show. It seems like no one can stand to sit through the pre-movie promos without being on their phones, but once the movie starts I've never had a problem, and I have a super-low tolerance for that shit. Again, pre-kids, I got into a fight with some snotnose teenagers who could not stop texting during a showing of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days at the Rio. DH was horrified at how I yelled at them.

The biggest problem are all the spoiled teenagers who text, talk, and get up and walk around through the whole thing. (Haven't seen too many babies brought in). And god forbid you politely ask them to stop doing whatever annoying thing you are doing, then you are a "f-ing b*tch" or whatever else they want to call you. I'm sure most of these kids come from good homes and I would like to think if their parents knew about this behavior they'd flip out, but I'm probably being way too optimistic.

Just get up quietly, find the manager, complain, and they will gently tell them to shut up or ask them to leave. The same goes for the idiots who bring babies, toddlers, and other children too young to sit through an adult movie. It works because I've done this a couple of times at Tysons.

So - the theory is white people in the suburbs make better movie goers?

Please stay in the 'burbs. I like my Gallery Place theater without you annoying MD and VA folks.
