| Try one of the smaller houses in Glen Echo Heights. |
Which is 20 days of reading time.

That's definitely woodsy and is a fantastic neighborhood - I have a good friend who lives a couple of streets over. Lots of kids.
For more space for the money, very close-in and very woodsy, try Forest Glen Park in Silver Spring. There are 3 listings there from $500K to $620K. ES is Woodlin. |
I just sold a 1962 rambler in Chesterbrook Woods--$975k, standard. There might be other neighborhoods in McLean that are under $800k--those that are close to Kent Gardens Elementary, but I can't remember the name....? |

Woodside Park in Silver Spring. Walkable to Metro, older neighborhood with prewar houses, deep setbacks, lots of trees. Close to the park too.
The zip is 20910 |

I second the recommendation for Mantua. Great wooded neighborhood, a short hop to DL Metro and feeds Woodson HS.

| Palisades and Kent |

Close-in Potomac. Fantastic schools. You could get 2500 sq ft and a slightly dated kitchen for $750K. Tons of trees and close to many parks.

| Nothing in Kent less than $800K, only one in Palisades less than $800K is 2 BR, 1 BA. |
| Reston off lawyers road is really woodsy |

Here's a great looking place in Brookeville! |
| Chevy Chase DC. I drive and it's 20-30 minutes to Dupont. A few houses in the 'hood for under $800k. This one is closest to Rock Creek: http://www.homesdatabase.com/home-listings-CHEVY+CHASE-WASHINGTON-DC-MRIS-DC7488929 |
| I'm not so sure Reston or Brookeville meet OP's criteria of a relatively close-in commute. |
| OP here. Those areas are too far for us. I am loving all of these great ideas though! Keep them coming! Anyone know about Kemp Mill in Silver Spring? |
