School stickers on cars.... views?

Anonymous
We have very uncool, older cars and we sport our school sticker. I like letting people know that not everyone that goes to this school drives or cares about fancy cars. It also helps me identify other like minded types at our school.

I have a mercedes and a bmw and I like letting people know that we have it all.

I'm not sure I understand you -- are you saying you don't have school stickers on DH's car because you think DH's car somehow isn't good enough to be associated with the school?

I notice more stickers in Montgomery Cty than I do in DC, and more Catholic (and L for Landon) than Big 3 and others. I guess I never thought a GDS or Holton Arms, or a purple G or SJC, was snobby. Just free advertising for a school they are proud to be part of.

For awhile I couldn't figure out what AHC (Academy of the Holy Cross in Kensington) meant. I googled the initials while stopped behind a nice SUV and my iPhone popped up American Horse Council. For a few weeks I though AHC meant the driver loves horses.

Hah. You nailed it. And the reason why so many Montgomery Cty cars have stickers is the social climbing thing.

Oh give me a break. I have three kids in three different schools (1 public and 2 private) and I have stickers for all three - the kids love them. Definitely a community thing, not a social climbing thing. (Yeah, my minivan is soooo cool). DH doesn't have any stickers, since I am the family bus driver and the kids are usually in my car. BTW - grew up in upper NW DC and I know from social climbing, trust me. Where I live (Kensington) is way more laid back than upper NW.

Maybe people will mistake you for old money.

Our school requests (but does not require) that we display the sticker (which is actually a magnet) to help with security at carpool. But I happily do so for community reasons. I like to think it has an unintended safety component in that I am aware that I represent the school to some degree and try not to cut people off in traffic as much...

If you live in parts of upper NW you aren't climbing you are at the top. Kensington is just poorer than Upper NW and thus "more laid back" or whatever people are calling it these days.

Reverse snobbery is equally distasteful

My point exactly! I doubt you would ever hear anyone in Kensington or ChCh referring themselves as being at the top, or equating laid back as being poor. I have neighbors who could buy and sell me ten times over, but they certainly aren't flashy about it, nor do they give a hoot where other folks live. Sounds like you've got a lot to prove.

I have nothing to prove. I live in a better part of the region than you. I make more money than you. I have a trust fund, so do my kids. I don't have to put stickers on my car because even though my kids go to private what's the big deal? It's not like any of these schools are the Hong Kong International school.

Yikes! And how do you know how much money I make? Or anything about my trust fund, or my kids'? Because I don't live in Foxhall or Forest Hills or Kalorama? Attitudes like yours is why I don't live in those areas. I grew up with your brand of pretension, and I vowed not to raise my family in that environment. Eewww.

Well you've never invited me to your country club so I'm not inviting you to lunch at the BX!

Well, we put a really big one on our plane.

I just took the sticker off my car after reading this thread. I honestly never thought about it. I was happy when DD got into a good school so I put the sticker on. It came in the admissions packet. Never thought it looked like bragging.
