THIS is the rationale for killing a member of congress, in the killer's own words:

"The majority of citizens in the united states of America have never read the united states of America's constitution. You don't have to accept the federalist laws," the video's titles say. "In conclusion, reading the second United States constitution, I can't trust the current government because of the ratifications: the government is implying mind control and brainwash on the people by controlling grammar. No! I won't pay debt with a currency that's not backed by gold and silver! No! I won't trust in god!"

It's a "dog whistle" metaphor. Palin and her "ilk" know perfectly well that they have the power to lure the crazies out to do their dirty work. Of course there will be no direct link but I don't think it is a stretch to say that the crazy rhetoric of this last political cycle has created a fertile atmosphere for such an act.

I really find it absurd to mention the two in the same breath. You have no such hate mongering from his constituents. So. I can't really even answer that sort of hypothetical.

Here is an interesting opinion from the Sheriff:

“The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous. And unfortunately, I think Arizona has become sort of the capital, we have beome the Mecca for prejudice and bigotry,” he said. “There’s reason to believe that this individual might have a mental issue, and I think that people who are unbalanced might be especially susceptible to vitriol.”

He's basically saying that political vitrol may have swayed this unbalanced individual to commit these acts. This is, if true, a heck of an indictment of the politicians who capitalize on hate.
