Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
| Oh my goodness--go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have gone on several trips (dd is 20 months) and while I missed her--the hardest part was getting on the airplane (I have abnormal fear that the plane would go down and dd would be an orphan)--once I was there, I was fine! I think if you know that you have great childcare ..and you do..you really should cherish this special trip with your hubby. You definitely need to think of this as a wonderful bonding experience for your child with your parents--trust me, I would love if my parents would be open to babysitting for nine days!!!!! Have fun!! |
| You have to do what feels right for your family. Keep in mind you can do this trip in less time though! My father goes to Buenos Aires frequently for pleasure and typically does a leave on a Thursday-return on a Monday trip! Granted that's quick...but can be done if you need to comprimise a bit. Good luck! |
| OP, I know you said that you haven't researched the trip and are just purchasing tickets, but it might be worth doing so. 24 hours trip from WAS to BA sounds excessively long (even with a connection through Miami). For a bit more money, you might be able to find a shorter flight, which might also you to justify cutting the trip shorter. |

Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good grief, it's just 9 days. My 4 year old would miss me a TON more than my 16 month old right now. I think it's tougher as they get older. I think it's a wonderful gift to spend that time with your husband...especially since your child will be in capable, family hands.
Go and have fun!! |
| GO!! You deserve it. We have done 4 nights away a couple of different times, (at 16 months, at 20 months) and I missed him alot, but definitely thought it was worth it!! I would defintely do longer, but I am a working mom and have to save my leave for my upcoming maternity leave. You will miss her, of course, but she will have tons of fun with your parents. Not many people even have the option to do a 9 day trip because of child care -- take the opportunity while you can!! I have at least three sets of friends that do a 10 day trip once a year -- no kids. Many people swear by it! |
| I vote with the go vote as well. My husband and I have left my 3.5 year old daughter several times while we have taken both long and short trips...the longest was a full week. During the longest trip, I thought I would go crazy missing her, but she (and we) had a great time. |
| just go ... ur marriage needs the trip . your daughter will not be traumitized . and i thought the emergency stuff was funny. |
|
I'd say go.
I think you'll regret not going much more than you'd regret going. Your child will be fine. Likely won't even remember you were gone after you get back. Even if she does- it's unlikely to persist long. She won't be traumatized for life, she'll be safe and enjoying grandma! |
| You should GO!!! like some PPs said, this will be a great chance for your DC to get to know the grandparents, you know she is going to be fine. It will be hard to get on the plane, but once you are there you'll have a great much needed time with your husband, plus Buenos Aires is beautiful, like Paris but in South America. You'll be fine, and when you come back you will feel like a new woman. |

Obviously, this is a very personal decision. It would be a difficult one for me. But if you decide to go, all will be fine. You will miss her, but really, they have no concept of time. Will you enjoy yourself? You know yourself better than anyone.
As for the comment about not being able to reach her, god forbid, for 24 hours, that's ridiculous. Have you seen a map lately? Argentina's not that far away. That's there and back and, obviously includes layovers, and not just time in an airplane. Let's not get overly dramatic. |
It was the OP that said it was 24 hours each way, not any of the responders. You should read more carefully before being so rude. |
| OP here -- well, now I'm really having some serious reservations after reading everyone's posts. The trip we want to take is to Argentina with some very good friends who are basically planning the whole trip, all we need to do is book our plane tickets (which are now on hold until 12/24). Believe me, if Buenos Aires were closer, I'd make it a 5-day trip, not a 9 day trip, but it takes a full 24 hours to get there and another to get back, so really not worth it for less time than planned. And this is also not a trip we can book just a few weeks out as one PP suggested. Part of me feels very selfish for wanting to go, and another part of me thinks my husband and I really deserve it. We haven't had a true "vacation" since our honeymoom almost 5 years ago (not including long weekends and trips to visit family). We went through a really hard time gettting pregnant with our daughter and had to cancel many trips due to IVF scheduling, so in a way the trip is long overdue. Ok, so now I'm justifying AND I'm still really torn--UGH...... |

I think you can only do the longer trips when they're younger. Once they hit a certain age it's not that easy and then all the trips should become family vacations. In other words if you're going to do a trip like this NOW is the time.

Even if it is taking 24 hours to get there (b/c of layovers, legs on trains, buses, etc.), that's obviously not 24 straight hours on a plane. So, if she's not on a plane for 24 straight hours - she'll be reachable! So the point that she shouldn't go b/c she won't be reachable for 24 hours is not a valid. |
| I agree with the poster who mentioned the prevalence of "mommy martyrdom" on this site. You should not let these posts make you feel guilty about going!! It sounds like you are long overdue for a real vacation & that this is a unique opportunity to go somewhere fabulous with friends. It also sounds like your parents are quite capable, and your daughter will be in great hands. Esp. being a SAHM, it sounds like you get lots and lots of time with your daughter. This will give her a great opportunity to really bond with your parents and you an opportunity to spend quality time with your husband & friends and recharge your batteries. I hope you go & thoroughly enjoy yourself! |
