Emory vs Georgetown

Two different schools with different social vibes. More older money/famous people kids at Georgetown whereas Emory is more “New South”/immigrant/Northern transplant.

Georgetown is also great for business and has great placement rates, especially in IB.

For government. A wash on business. But for everything else, Emory is the better comprehensive school.

For whatever reason, Georgetown doesn't really do science, tech, engineering, cs and so on. Plus Georgetown is much more a rich kid school these days. It's limiting.

Nor does Emory

To banks... sure, to grad schools...not a chance in hell.

It's going to be a very tough year for Georgetown acceptance given this is their first year on the common app. Expect already low acceptance rate to plummet.

ED2 at Emory doesn't provide much of an advantage, but ED1 has close to a 30 percent aceeptance rate.

If one is going on strategy alone, the easy choice is to ED1 Emory. Probably three to four times liklihood of acceptance of Georgetown EA.

Emory and Georgetown are sister schools really. At least when it comes to campus culture and student body. Emory is Georgetown for minorities.

No, they are not.

At Georgetown, everyone submits a standardized test score.

At Emory, half go test optional.

Only 32% are TO at Emory, but what does that have to do with student culture?

Nor does Emory

Premed is science.

technically, yes but not a 4 year degree that will get you a good job and build a career from unless you in fact go to med school

Well if they want international relations/politics, Georgetown is the best.

What are they planning to study?

More than 40% enrolled freshmen did not submit a standardized test score. The ACT and SAT submission rate are double counted if one submit both, which historically 15% do.

is this why most would pick georgetown over emory?

If you want to get the real advantages of applying early then apply ED1 to Emory. Georgetown EA and RD rates the same and ED2 at Emory much less of an advantage

McDonough (GU) is a very well regarded business school in the Northeast. Great placements. If you want to work in NYC, DC, Boston, etc much better

DS 3.82UW, 1470 is retaking. Highest rigor. Full pay.

Does your kid LOVE either of these schools? If the kid loves Emory, then ED there. If he can get the SAT up over 1500, I'd guess he has a fair shot. Not sure why ED2 would make sense.

If the kid LOVES Georgetown, you can EA, but I'd also EA to at least a couple of less selective schools (Pitt, which like both Emory and Georgetown, is in a city, could be a good safety. Maybe also Tulane and Miami could be good safety/targets.) EA at Georgetown is tougher than RD, so make sure he's prepared for a rejection, and knows that his application will be reconsidered. A deferral at Georgetown is not the soft denial it is at many other places.

Seems to me that Georgetown and Emory have very different feels/ student cultures. I would think about fit over prestige here.

Lol, definitely doesn't need a SAT over 1500 for Emory where 40 oercent of the enrolled kids are test optional. All it takes from our private at ED 1 stage is being in top half of the class, that 30 percent acceptance rate is something.

Not much better. More like a wash in NYC. You can't go wromng with either. What does your kid like? I do not think they are alike at all in terms of culture.
