Hawaii or Greece?

Never been to Hawaii but I’d return to Greece in a heartbeat. I love how child friendly it is, and love the food.

Is that a joke? Oahu is amazing. Sorry if you never made it out of Waikiki.

With two young elementary age kids.

Husband and I went to Maui about 10 years or so ago. If Hawaii, we’d probably pick Oahu this time.

Never been to Greece but have always wanted to go

Kids are good travelers - have been to Portugal and Italy. They liked both but really enjoyed Italy (food was a big hit with them)

Hawaii seems more “kid-focused” but the logistics of getting there seem harder than going to Greece.

Is this from the DC area? With Greece you need to work in ferry time for most islands and they are notoriously unreliable. Can you explain why the logistics seem more difficult for Hawaii?

Not OP but Crete is an easy air trip and Hydra an easy, frequent ferry ride (and the Peloponnese is an easy drive). I wouldn’t say notoriously unreliable ferries are an inevitable problem in planning a trip to Greece.

PP here and yes I was thinking of Crete but people are very hot and cold on Crete. Some love it, some hate it, and usually when people ask about Greece they are thinking Cyclades.

Huh. I never really met someone who hated Crete, but I have met people disappointed by Santorini. I do get that when you say “Greek isles” Crete is not what you immediately think of, but a lot of people come to realize the idea of Santorini is less attractive than the reality.

LOL did you not see the news today? There will be no fuel.

If you must be this stupid, Hawaii.

My DC liked both but would pick Hawaii of the 2 choices.

If food is highly important, Greece no question. Hawaii for nature.

There is some fun food in Hawaii too. My kid loved the fruit markets with fresh papaya and apple bananas.

My kids liked the food in Hawaii - rice, pineapple and fruit, fish tacos, shave ice.

Hawaii has its food. And it can be likable.

However, in the context of OPs kids "really enjoying" Portugal and Italy, singling out the food, there is no comparison here. Manage expectations. Go to Hawaii. It's beautiful. Just don't expect really-enjoying-Italy-food. It's not even remotely close.

I mean they are young elementary school kids. My kid did try a lot of things in Italy when he was there, but let's get very real, shave ice and masalada donuts will be just as loved as any Greek food.

You don't need to take ferries to most Greek islands. You can take an airplane. You also don't have to go to islands. You can do trips on the mainland. The country has tons of coastline and hundreds of islands. If you're leaving from the DMV, there is a direct flight to Athens from Dulles.

The following Greek islands have airports:

Astypalaia (JTY)
Chania / Crete (CHQ)
Chios (JKH)
Corfu (CFU)
Heraklion / Crete (HER)
Ikaria (JIK)
Kalymnos (JKL)
Karpathos (AOK)
Kasos (KSJ)
Kastellorizo (KZS)
Kefalonia (EFL)
Kos (KGS)
Kythira (KIT)
Leros (LRS)
Lesvos / Mytilene (MJT)
Limnos / Lemnos (LXS)
Milos (MLO)
Mykonos (JMK)
Naxos (JNX)
Paros (PAS)
Rhodes (RHO)
Samos (SMI)
Santorini (JTR)
Sitia / Crete (JSH)
Skiathos (JSI)
Skyros (SKU)
Syros (JSY)
Zakynthos / Zante (ZTH)

The Oahu haters are so funny. Keep hating and leave the island for the rest of us, thanks!

NP: I love Waikiki (yes, I've been to other beaches and islands). Someone here loves to bash Hawaii, Oahu in particular.

Oahu is more crowded and has a lot of traffic but it has some absolutely amazing hikes and swimming, and a lot of fun food. I'm from a Navy family so my Dad would take me on base and all around the ships.

My personal favorite for a trip is the Big Island but Oahu is a great time too.

So is no one buying plane tickets anymore?

I've been all over the island... sorry that the place is not so great. I'd do other islands, especially the empty ones, but never back to Oahu. It's too small, too crowded, too built up, and too dirty.

With kids, I’d say Hawaii. But Big Island instead of Oahu.

Why do you prefer big island?

Not PP but for me the main benefits to the Big Island are Volcano National Park and Mauna Kea observatory (you can't bring kids under 23 to the summit but you can go to the visitor's center and see more stars than you have ever seen before). I have also seen more dolphins swimming near the Big Island (young elementary probably too young for the manta ray dive but that's big Island as well).
