Hawaii or Greece?

Which would you choose?

With two young elementary age kids.

Husband and I went to Maui about 10 years or so ago. If Hawaii, we’d probably pick Oahu this time.

Never been to Greece but have always wanted to go

Kids are good travelers - have been to Portugal and Italy. They liked both but really enjoyed Italy (food was a big hit with them)

Hawaii seems more “kid-focused” but the logistics of getting there seem harder than going to Greece.

Is this from the DC area? With Greece you need to work in ferry time for most islands and they are notoriously unreliable. Can you explain why the logistics seem more difficult for Hawaii?

My young kid absolutely loved Volcano National Park, so I'd recommend Hawaii but the Big Island instead.

If food is highly important, Greece no question. Hawaii for nature.

Not OP but Crete is an easy air trip and Hydra an easy, frequent ferry ride (and the Peloponnese is an easy drive). I wouldn’t say notoriously unreliable ferries are an inevitable problem in planning a trip to Greece.

There is some fun food in Hawaii too. My kid loved the fruit markets with fresh papaya and apple bananas.

My kids liked the food in Hawaii - rice, pineapple and fruit, fish tacos, shave ice.

I liked my Hawaii trip (Oahu + Kauai) better than my Greece trip (Athens + Naxos + Santorini). But that's because I like nature and I go to be outside every day in Hawaii hiking or going to the beach. Greece is also great, but there was sightseeing included, which is just not my favorite.

Good food in both places. For HI, we avoided overnight flights so we found it easier to get there. On the way back, we spent a night on the west coast to avoid an overnight. Greece you have to take an overnight there. And I was reminded how much easier it is to fly domestically than internationally.

I'd go to Greece because you haven't gone there yet. Sometimes places become inaccessible and you regret missing the opportunity to see them.

PP here and yes I was thinking of Crete but people are very hot and cold on Crete. Some love it, some hate it, and usually when people ask about Greece they are thinking Cyclades.

Oahu? Yuck. Why fly 10 hours for that dump?

Why Oahu and not Kauai or the Big Island or even Maui again? Hawaii is great for kids and offers so many things to do.

Naxos is also a short flight from Athens, with 10+ flights/day.

Hawaii has its food. And it can be likable.

However, in the context of OPs kids "really enjoying" Portugal and Italy, singling out the food, there is no comparison here. Manage expectations. Go to Hawaii. It's beautiful. Just don't expect really-enjoying-Italy-food. It's not even remotely close.

We went to the big island recently. Loved it. I don’t know if Oahu would top our list though.
