It’s on ModeratelyMoCo and on various MoCo, MCPS groups FB so it must be true.

Winston Churchill High School Families and Community:

I am writing to let you know about a serious incident at Winston Churchill High School at the end of the school day on Friday, June 5. We are aware of videos that have been posted this weekend on social media of an assault on one of our students during the last few minutes of class on Friday. Two students entered a classroom, attacked a fellow student and then fled both the class and the building. Staff members and security immediately intervened and responded to ensure the student involved was provided aid and support, and that the students who perpetrated this attack were unable to further endanger the safety of our students or staff in the building.

We recognize that some families may be wondering why this communication is being shared today. Following the incident, our immediate focus was ensuring the safety and well-being of the student involved, securing the classroom and school, gathering facts, and beginning a thorough investigation. Members of the administrative team and Security did that work and began immediately to address this clear violation of both our school expectations and core values, as well as violating the MCPS Student Code of Conduct. This type of behavior is completely unacceptable at Winston Churchill HS, or any school in MCPS. The students who led this attack will receive the most severe consequences based on the MCPS Student Code of Conduct. Our school team will be putting additional Safety plans and Supportive Measures in place to help ensure that there is no future occurrence of this type of behavior.

Unfortunately, this assault was shared on social media, and your student may have seen it, or had the video shared with them. Please encourage your student not to participate in gossip or the sharing of the video. If your student has specific knowledge or information about the incident, please have them come to the main office on Monday so they can share it with Security and administration. We know that this type of violence and serious incidents can negatively impact students. The Counseling Services Team and our School Social Worker will be available over the next few days to meet with and support any students who need it.

This is a very unfortunate incident and we will continue to work to implement safety protocols in order to ensure the ongoing safety of our students and staff. I am deeply appreciative of our staff and Security team who were present and immediately intervened and responded to keep this situation from being even worse. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have concerns or questions about the incident.

Sincerely,

John Taylor, Principal

Stuff like this wouldn't happen if teachers were allowed to intervene and forcibly restrain and separate students.

Teachers are not allowed to forcibly restrain and separate students in a fight?

Who is supposed to stop this madness? Police? SRO? CRO?

Who is responsible for student safety? What if they had a gun?

OK but "assault" is a crime. So, nothing about referral to MCPD? Is it up to the parents of the student who was assaulted to file a police report?

Yes, it is.

IF YOUR CHILD IS THE VICTIM OF AN ASSAULT IN SCHOOL, DO NOT WAIT FOR THE MCPS RESPONSE, BUT FILE A POLICE REPORT IMMEDIATELY.

This is not me acting hostile towards MCPS, but just me acknowledging the way the school system works. It protect its employees first and foremost, and gives a passing nod to the perp and victim. The victim is not the top priority for MCPS. You, as the parent, have to do what's best for your child.

This is what my kid said. Doesn't have any direct knowledge, but said that Kid's friend just let them in by opening a door. Or if the kid is a student at the school, other kids would view them as belonging there and happily open a door for them if they knocked.

They can also sneak in not only during the morning scrum. But every period, there are kids moving from portables into the school. When I drop my kid off late, they always ask to go at those class changes so they can enter with those kids and bypass the office. Note that those doors are watched by security, who presumably were given photos of kids who were to be kept out. But it seems like that would be easy to miss when a mob of kids enter every 45 minutes every day.

For some reason, I receive emails of crimes within a radius of my home. They are direct police reports. This morning, my email showed one from that day on the 'block' of WCHS. I assume it was that incident (but am extrapolating from quasi-disguised info).

Kids are only supposed to enter through ONE of the dozens of exterior doors. But short of mandating single-file dismissal for thousands of students, there's no feasible way of preventing entry. Idk the point of one police officer in any given school; the buildings are massive.

They are so bad at this. Why didn’t they call the police and why did they wait days to send a letter notifying the community? Every single time there is an incident, the response is not as tight as it could or should be. Also, it has been said many times, but all these expelled kids and kids with criminal histories should not be returning to our regular gened schools. They are known threats to our school communities and MCPS needs to figure out an alternative environment where the right level of supervision is possible (the regular schools can’t provide the level of supervision obviously needed). Marcus Jones needs to work with Taylor to make this a priority.

What makes you think they didn't call the police? If you saw the video, you'd see that the teacher in the classroom was quite petite and she did enter the ruckus at some point, just not immediately (she entered when she saw an opportunity). She yelled for kids to call security but again, maybe about 30 seconds later than you'd like. I've never been in such a situation so try to give the benefit of the doubt that this isn't so different from what a lot of people would do.

It seems like maybe there is a criminal assault case being made, so I'm not sure why you think they didn't call police.

When there's a couple of day delay (which, btw, was over the weekend so kids weren't in school those days in between), it's usually because the MCPS central admin wants to approve the language before sending it out. Likely for legal reasons.

I agree with your point on alternate environments, though. This seems to happen with enough frequency that it would be a full building. I'd hate to be a teacher working there but it would make the environment better for everyone else.

You're right. I'm sorry. We should all send our kids to private school. Problem solved! How silly of poor me.

Don’t have children until you can provide them with an education where they are safe.

Eugenics! Of course! Right again!

If teachers fear administrative retaliation and have no confidence in the union, then, yeah, no one could have predicted anything. Probably because we can't give admin a reason to make us one of the 40+ chopping block.
