Where is the letter?
Winston Churchill High School Families and Community: I am writing to let you know about a serious incident at Winston Churchill High School at the end of the school day on Friday, June 5. We are aware of videos that have been posted this weekend on social media of an assault on one of our students during the last few minutes of class on Friday. Two students entered a classroom, attacked a fellow student and then fled both the class and the building. Staff members and security immediately intervened and responded to ensure the student involved was provided aid and support, and that the students who perpetrated this attack were unable to further endanger the safety of our students or staff in the building. We recognize that some families may be wondering why this communication is being shared today. Following the incident, our immediate focus was ensuring the safety and well-being of the student involved, securing the classroom and school, gathering facts, and beginning a thorough investigation. Members of the administrative team and Security did that work and began immediately to address this clear violation of both our school expectations and core values, as well as violating the MCPS Student Code of Conduct. This type of behavior is completely unacceptable at Winston Churchill HS, or any school in MCPS. The students who led this attack will receive the most severe consequences based on the MCPS Student Code of Conduct. Our school team will be putting additional Safety plans and Supportive Measures in place to help ensure that there is no future occurrence of this type of behavior. Unfortunately, this assault was shared on social media, and your student may have seen it, or had the video shared with them. Please encourage your student not to participate in gossip or the sharing of the video. If your student has specific knowledge or information about the incident, please have them come to the main office on Monday so they can share it with Security and administration. We know that this type of violence and serious incidents can negatively impact students. The Counseling Services Team and our School Social Worker will be available over the next few days to meet with and support any students who need it. This is a very unfortunate incident and we will continue to work to implement safety protocols in order to ensure the ongoing safety of our students and staff. I am deeply appreciative of our staff and Security team who were present and immediately intervened and responded to keep this situation from being even worse. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have concerns or questions about the incident. Sincerely, John Taylor, Principal
OK but "assault" is a crime. So, nothing about referral to MCPD? Is it up to the parents of the student who was assaulted to file a police report?
Yes, it is.
