Is age 9 too old for this?

There was a troll a while back repeatedly posting similar scenarios.

My 10 year old and 7 year old swim naked at their grandparent’s pool. I imagine they’ll start to feel self conscious soon and cover up on their own. I’d be inclined to bring her suit and let her choose.

Genuine question for those with kids that swim naked…I assume that when they were little, they wore swim diapers? So they were originally covered, but after potty training, they went uncovered? I have never considered letting my kids swim sans suits, so I find this all so surprising.

I'm from France, so maybe my perspective is different, but I think that it's all fine until she starts having breast buds (which are the first signs of puberty).

But if any of you get uncomfortable, you can always get her a cute swimsuit. There are so many fun ones these days, OP.

No worries.

So whether you put her in a bathing suit now or wait until she shows signs of puberty, you are still putting her in the position of having to cover up due to her body changing. Think of the message it's going to send to her when that happens, especially when her cousins' bodies will apparently still be deemed ok to be seen.

This is why they should all be in suits every time. It's an equalizer.

Also kids in 2nd/3rd grade definitely talk about butts and penises, so having those 7 year old boys running around naked could be creating some confusion for you DD and those boys even if none of them are in puberty yet. There will come a day when it's just straight up weird that these boys are running around with their penises out around family and that day is way sooner than you or their parents seem to think.

I think the parent/mom was sending OP a message.

I'm from a country where nudity is not really seen as a big deal. It's very common to see pre pubescent girls at the beach wearing bathing suit bottoms only. Little kids will get completely naked around others to change.

I don't necessarily see a problem with this. My biggest question is if the option for her to wear a bathing suit is there or not. If you bring one and she chooses not to wear it...that's fine. If she's just expected to be naked, that's not ok. As for the people crying "pedophilia". If Uncle Greg is attracted to his 9 year old niece, it's not going to make a difference whether she's naked or if she's covered by a thin and tight bathing suit.

OP here.

Thanks to the ones with genuine replies and suggestions.

I am surprised by so many hostile replies and name callings. I am not American so I get that my perspective on nudity is different than most here, but why are people acting like we are parading our kids naked in the streets or something? Do Americans get offended seeing their own kids naked or something?

It’s no longer appropriate at her age IMO.

Offended? No. But I haven’t seen my kid in the nude since he was 7 or so. Privacy is normal.

Why would prepubescent girls be wearing swimsuit bottoms at the beach?

+1 creeper out and hoping this is a troll post

I think kids those ages changing off to the side briefly in view of each other or whatever is fine. There's convenience and they're not self conscious which is great. The actual swimming part seems absurd to me.

The same reason any one else wears pants, or swimsuit bottoms, in public? What kind of a question is this exactly

All the kids are too old for this.

You write as if swimsuits are an impossible burden as opposed to readily available clothing items that are easy to wear.
