What is WashU trying to accomplish by adding EA?

Competitive students get scooped up by EA schools, and schools that only have ED and RD lose out. I’ve never understood why schools still have RD.

Not sure wtf you’re talking about.

Clearly, you’re not well-versed in admissions are you?

It’s when you defer an EA applicant, but call them / email them and tell them if they switch to ED2 by last-minute date they will be automatically admitted (and often with a financial aid package or even sometimes merit).
Mid-February.
And it works!

If schools don't have RD, their number of applications would nose dive, significantly increasing their acceptance rate, which they obviously don't want.

Schools know that historical data send messages to applicants. If they have both ED and RD rounds, they don't want to fill up, say, 90% of their class through ED because then applicants would be discouraged from applying RD, hurting their acceptance rate. Likewise, they don't want to fill up, again say, 90% of their class through RD because then few would bother with ED, hurting their acceptance and yield rates. Which is why most schools choose to fill up around 50% of their class through ED.

Notorious UChicago ED3.

That doesn't happen.

No need to reply to yourself. Also, calling it "ED3" just shows how stupid and unversed with the English language you are.

Obsessed much, weirdo? Did you not get in 20 years ago, lol?

This happens from a lot of different schools. Schools of differing selectivity.

They even talked about it on a podcast this week.

Talk to any former U Chicago admissions officer sitting at Ingenius prep. You guys need to get off of this site into the real world. It’s all about enrollment management and managing your yield.

I think it’s brilliant.

UChicago also has ED + EA this but I don't know what they tend to do with their EA applicants. Is it a harder or easier admit than RD?

Look man, the school is in St. Louis, Missouri. They need to do all the things to fill this class.

This is not a negative. It’s a positive.

Not all midwest school has this "positive", Northwestern does not have it. Never worried about filling the class.

For a school that loves to market itself as quirky, the process feels surprisingly transactional. EA is never intended to be a genuine admissions round and more like a funnel for identifying weak-minded students who might be converted into binding applicants.

But what’s wrong with that? For the right student it’s a great option. If it doesn’t work for your family, that’s OK.

Most private schools have abandoned EA.

My kid was admitted EA and accepted the spot.

But I'm genuinely so confused as to why UChicago has even been mentioned in this thread. There have been tons and tons of threads about UChicago made in the past few weeks -- go there.

There seem to be a few posters on here who have made it their life's mission to diss UChicago at every single opportunity. It's really weird; if you don't like the school, just simply don't apply. It takes a special kind of mental illness to continuously post about a school.
