Competitive students get scooped up by EA schools, and schools that only have ED and RD lose out. I’ve never understood why schools still have RD.
If schools don't have RD, their number of applications would nose dive, significantly increasing their acceptance rate, which they obviously don't want. Schools know that historical data send messages to applicants. If they have both ED and RD rounds, they don't want to fill up, say, 90% of their class through ED because then applicants would be discouraged from applying RD, hurting their acceptance rate. Likewise, they don't want to fill up, again say, 90% of their class through RD because then few would bother with ED, hurting their acceptance and yield rates. Which is why most schools choose to fill up around 50% of their class through ED.
