Is UVA an easier admit for boys?

Anonymous
I was looking at this he if those UVA 2030 instagram accounts this morning and it’s just a sea of nearly identical looking girls. I guess boys aren’t as likely to post on those maybe? And I know that the girls do outnumber the boys, but it’s weird.

Yeah, that’s my point. The rate of admission doesn’t mean anything.

Year after year the admit rate for boys and girls at UVA is virtually identical. In fact, on a percentage basis a slightly higher percentage of girls get in than boys. For example, in 2025 the rate was 16 percent for girls and 15 for boys.

That doesn't mean it isn't easier for boys.

Yes, it does. It certainly means more than "that's what I think."

Year after year after year the admit rates are the same. Year after year after year after year. Take a look at William & Mary and you'll see a stark historical difference.

This does not show us much without showing what the average SAT or GPA scores are for each gender. Plus softs, LORs, etc.

I’m a mom of three boys and my youngest is applying to college now. I pay attention. Girls have more competition among themselves than boys do in college admissions.

Oh my God you people are relentless. When there's data going back a decade showing more girls applying every single year but nearly identical admissions rates by gender you can pretty much assume the school isn't taking gender into account. It's certainly more likely to mean that then some know nothing on DCUM "thinking" otherwise.

Sigh. Not everywhere and certainly not in state schools. It's actually illegal under Title IX for a state school to discriminate on the basis of gender in undergrad admissions. It's not illegal for private schools. UVA has long been on record that it does not favor either gender in admissions and the data supports that.

Yes, definitely at UVA.

I don't think you have actually looked at data. A lot of the slac that people assume favor boys, do not. They have a higher admit rate for girls. Because they are just better applicants.

It doesn't mean nothing either. Can you at least tell ius where you are getting your info?

Fewer boys are applying to college. This is a sad state of affairs and has been addressed in articles if you read. So if the number of girls applying is higher, it means there is more competition between girls. Boys aren’t taking anything. Or having an easier time. Get over it. Stop blaming boys.

Not blaming boys. Just interested in the stats.

Exactly my point. Fewer boys applying means less competition among boys makes it easier for boys to get an acceptance. This admission cycle, 5/5 boys out of state for UVA were accepted, whereas the one girl I know who applied also out of state was rejected. I asked this question based on my observation. All have similar stats. The girl who was rejected from UVA was accepted to Michigan engineering. One of the 5 boys also accepted to Michigan engineering.

Saying it’s “easier to get in” suggests lesser stats. So actually say what you mean.

No, they don't. Here's the data.

You'd need to know the qualifications (SAT, GPA) of each group to give a more definitive answer. In general, there are a lot more qualified women applicants these days.

Everything is an easier admit for boys except for women’s colleges and a few tech schools.

DP. No it doesn’t. It means less competition.
