Not only are you wrong about them not offering it to other high schools (as per this thread), but you are wrong about the whole point of opt-in. The school is opt-in because as a start up it is unable to offer the full slate of activities that many people want in high school, like sports and clubs that take a year or two to get off the ground. They made it opt in so as not to force kids to attend next year and miss out on those things. It has nothing to do with gauging interest. That is a fallacy pushed by people who are hoping to use the opt-in numbers to further their interests in where the boundary will be drawn. |
No one knows. They want to but it is likely only offered if there are enough students interested. The message at the open houses and online meetings has been that students course selections will drive elective offerings, like at all schools, and that none of the specialized classes for the pathways would be available in the first year. Mr. Jagels has been very responsive to emails, he might have a better answer for you although I would guess that anything regarding flying will be conditional. |
Marshall was not available during the initial opt-in period because it was limited to the 5 HS that could be effected by the boundary shift caused by Skyview. There has been speculation that the opt-in numbers could be used to finalize what schools are moved to Skyview but no one in FCPS has said that or implied that. The only schools that people seem to think are being decided between are Crossfield and Fox Mill. Most everyone is certain that Oak Hill, Floris (maybe all of it), McNair, and Coates are going to be moved to Skyview. Floris seems to be happy and Oak Hill seems resigned to moving. I have not heard much from people out of McNair or Coates on this board and I don't know families from either school so I have no clue how they feel. Fox Mill is split on the idea, some are excited and want it, others don't. Crossfield seems opposed but there are a few who really want to move. What i am getting at is the idea that the numbers are being used to determine interest might be true, we don't know, but I suspect it would only impact Crossfield and Fox Mill. I don't think Skyview is available on the transfer portal. No one has reported that it is so I really don't know. But Mr. Jagels said that there are seats available and that they would accept kids from outside the original 5 schools. |
Given how badly the school board caved on redistricting, I think the idea that the school would look at numbers and go "10% of school X opted in while 40% of school y opted in, let's move Y because there will be fewer pissed off parents" is not exactly unreasonable speculation. |
| They are definitely looking for more students. Kids eligible have been pulled out of middle school classes to try to convince them to go. With out parent permission. |
What does "eligible" mean other than being an 8th or 9th grader currently zoned to Centreville, Chantilly, Oakton, South Lakes, or Westfield? The whole thing has been so poorly executed so far. Lies about the cost, lies about the savings, confusion about the type of school (neighborhood, magnet, hybrid), disagreement over the name, confusion about boundaries, confusion about what courses would be offered and when, confusion about which students can attend, and so on. Reid and her cronies ought to be sent on a one-way mission to Mars. They can enjoy the blue sunsets there. |
Are you talking about the meetings that took place before class selection with the 10-15 minute presentations? That the parents were emailed about? My kid is at Carson in 8th grade, he has not mentioned any additional meetings to discuss the school at school. |
No I am not talking about that. I’m talking about students removed from class at Thoreau with no parental notification to be given a sales pitch about Skyview. I love how everyone on this board is constantly trying to tell people things didn’t happen when they have no idea what they’re talking about |
DP. Were they Thoreau kids zoned to Oakton, or also Thoreau kids zoned to Madison or Marshall? I definitely get the sense that the "success" of Skyview matters more to Reid than the success of every other school in FCPS combined. |
Weird that they are doing that. I wonder how many other schools they are doing it at. |
They are probably at Thoreau for Oakton zoned kids but there are also Marshall zoned kids who live very close to Crossfield neighborhoods on Fox Mill rd. |
| They had meetings with the 8th graders at Hughes, it feeds South Lakes. So they are having the conversations with the kids who could attend one of the 5 HS. It sounds like those are continuing. |

| Update: They have opened opt-in to all of Fairfax county. If you send a communication through their website form, they will provide further information. https://www.fcps.edu/skyview |
Odd since the FAQs at this link just say kids from five pyramids can opt in and the deadline expired. Sounds like they want more kids but don’t want to admit they couldn’t fill their classes with kids from the schools they were saying were overcrowded. |
