This article contradicts the picture you painted and states he was hiding in his backyard. But even so, the school should have locked down until they knew.

Great catch and good questions, OP.

It sounds like you're suggesting they should have put all nearby schools on lockdown. I don't think that sounds reasonable under the circumstances.

That's exactly what should happen when a gunman is at large. And that's the process that the school system says will happen in these situation. Not just for shootings that happened at a nearby school, but for any shooting in the vicinity of a school. It's not that it's assumed they're going to target another school, but it's assumed police officers will be searching and the gunman will be hiding/ running. They want to make sure they can't run to a school and use kids to confuse the pursuit or to prevent any small chance a kid could be in a crossfire that could happen in a pursuit. Those are not likely outcomes, but it is a precaution that school's take.

How wide of an area? For how long?

And you seem to want to do this any time the police are looking for someone with a gun?

That really doesn't sound like a reasonable reaction.

Julius West is extremely close to Wootton. So close that they caught the shooter right in front of it! That proves the point that they should have locked down. Moreover, kids at Julius west live in the neighborhood right behind Wootton.

He got in a car, which they seemed to know right away. He could have quickly made it to a lot of schools. How wide of an area should be locked down and for how long?

Julius West is not that close. Frost, sure.

Google Maps says 1.8 miles by car, but now I wonder was frost on lockdown since it's closer?

I agree they need a better system to communicate lockdowns at nearby schools. I picked my kid up at a relatively close MS and dismissal was normal - except kids all knew about the shooting and had seen photos already via phones

What about Ritchie Park, Lakewood, and Fallsmead ESs?

Once in a car, how many schools are 15 minutes away?

Fallsmead was locked down. Ritchie park did go into a minimal lock down where nobody was allowed in or out

How do you know that's who they were?

I wonder if that's where they live then? I'm not familiar with that area to know. Maybe they initially found him in his back yard, but of course brought him to the street there.

Yalll want to talk about lockdown failures? The media isn’t reporting this and MCPS will never own up to this… but ask any Fallsmead parent.

The announcement made at Fallsmead ES made it sound like there was an active shooter in Fallsmead. At least one classroom ran out into the Fallsmead community with their teacher. The ended up sheltering at some kid’s basement.

The irony is that they ran quite literally into danger.

But no…MCPS won’t include that will they??

You misread the article. It says he ran home and hid the gun in his back yard. It says he was caught later away from the school. It does not say he was caught at home. He went back out with his mother and sister, where he was caught near Julius west.
