Echols Scholars?

My son received his Echols letter of acceptance Friday afternoon/evening. I would love to hear about people’s experiences in the program as he’s currently undecided on where to attend.

My daughter is Echols. First year Echols dorm in Balz-Dobiie (newer dorm; centrally located), although student can opt out. My daughter tells me that the director/professor of the program is very well-organized, accessible and as sweet as can be. Echols Scholars are offered a wide variety of events, tours, get-togethers, networking and volunteer/committee opportunities, and so much more - all exclusive to Echols.

Beyond the benefit of early course registration, Echols are exempt from general education/distribution requirements which is huge. My daughter, who is a second-year now, is on track to graduate a year early with two majors and a minor, with her “primary” major being a distinguished major and her 4th year will be a Masters. Echols also have the option of designing their own major. Lots of flexibility.

We’re big fans of UVA. This school is the full package.

When are the next Echols Scholars decisions coming out? Will they be for RD applicants only?

The school’s website stated late March to mid-April for RD applications.

Half of the Echols and Rodmans get in to ivy/T10 from our private. The other half get shut out. All are top few in the class. The Jefferson winner got shut out of ivies. They were not even top 10 %. They look for different things, Echols/Rodman being more focused on scores/gpa/coursework.

The next round of Echols includes kids admitted in all rounds, not just RD.

How about IVY/T10 stat for those who got into UVA but NOT offered Echols or Rodmans.

My kid got in to 2 ivies RD last year but not Echols or Rodman. The only Echols attending from their school was ED.

My son is a 3rd year Echols Scholar. He also got into Stanford. Not having any pre-requisites and having priority registration has been a definite perk.

It certainly helped. And the cost of in state tuition. We were shocked by the Stanford admit and we gave it a lot of thought, but the cost and distance were a big factor and UVA with Echols made more sense. Do I sometimes wonder if we made the right choice? Sure. But UVA has been great for him and he's happy. And I am certainly grateful to have him closer to home. He intends to go to law school eventually, and we'll see where he ends up then.

Smart. If he intends to go to law school, save the extra $50k/year for that. Nobody cares where you went to undergrad when you're looking for a job out of law school.
