My son is a 3rd year Echols Scholar. He also got into Stanford. Not having any pre-requisites and having priority registration has been a definite perk. From their website: We seek "active and aggressive" learners, and evidence in a student’s record that demonstrates independence, initiative, intellectual versatility, and the ability to thrive in a creative and mentally engaging community. https://echols.as.virginia.edu/frequently-asked-questions-faqs-about-echols-scholars-program
That doesn't happen every day. Did Echols tip the balance?
It certainly helped. And the cost of in state tuition. We were shocked by the Stanford admit and we gave it a lot of thought, but the cost and distance were a big factor and UVA with Echols made more sense. Do I sometimes wonder if we made the right choice? Sure. But UVA has been great for him and he's happy. And I am certainly grateful to have him closer to home. He intends to go to law school eventually, and we'll see where he ends up then.
Smart. If he intends to go to law school, save the extra $50k/year for that. Nobody cares where you went to undergrad when you're looking for a job out of law school.
