Echols Scholars?

I saw UVA released the Echols Scholar invites. Did any one get an invite? Is it based mostly on stats or ECs? Are these the Ivy level kids?

They're often HYP level from around here. Lower from other areas of the country.

It is usually an incentive for a very top student to attend UVa. Ditto for Rodman.

I was an Echols Scholar back in the day. It’s an amazing program! Congrats to all!!

Ivy quality student usually will be in the zone for Echols consideration.

Totally not relevant but, I went to UVa and was no where CLOSE to being an Echols scholar, but I dated the grandson of the professor it was named after. He wasn’t a student, he was a townie. He lived in a big house off Ivy Rd.

You just made me want to google him. Thanks.

DD is at UVA and several of her friends are Echols Scholars and they are really exceptional in their involvement and interests. We’ve been so impressed by those we’ve met.

If you read the announcement, it’s more than stats.

Right, which is why I said “mostly” stats.

My kid received the echols scholar result yesterday. I guess I have not appreciated it is a big deal. No merit money unfortunately.

As far as I know, UVa does not give out "merit" money at all. They do have various need-based scholarships.

Important to remember that the Jefferson Scholars program (and money) are done by the Jefferson Scholars Foundation, which is independent from UVa.

It's all such a crap shoot. My kid was Jefferson Scholar nominee from their very competitive HS, but no Echols for them. A classmate did get invited to Echols and I have no idea why - I assume test scores.

It’s really strange. My older son was accepted to 2 Ivies RD, Hopkins, Williams, Monroe Scholar W&M, Georgetown, etc - but no Echols. He was worried about getting courses at UVA and Echols might have kept it in contention, but w/out it he decided against it.

^ I don’t think it can be test scores because he had a perfect ACT and 5s on all AP exams, athlete, community service, job, clubs, etc
