You have to apply early to get merit for most majors there.

They also make you manually enter grades on the common app rather than just send a transcript so they can pre-screen applications for EA by computer. They'll only have time to review appications with stats that qualify for top merit aid. Those are the only ones that get read for potential EA acceptance, along with athlete recruits and legacies.

The rest just get marked as "deferrals" and moved unread to RD.

So unless your student has 3.9+ unweighted GPA plus 1500+ SAT/34+ ACT, they will get moved to deferral unread and be part of the RD round.

Not true! My kid is in. Its not his first choice tho.

Many people might not be aware that USC is relatively new to offering EA. Historically, USC only offered RD, with merit-seeking RD applicants having an early deadline and hearing in January. USC's EA is really only a new name for that same old process.

If your DC was accepted by USC EA ...

It's a great news! Congrats!

But if your DC was deferred by USC EA ...

It is not necessarily a bad news, if your DC is high stats.

USC is very good in yield protect. They defer many many high stats kids to RD. The fact that your DC is deferred indicates USC doesn't believe they will come to USC after acceptance.

This is good news.

My kid got into Viterbi with similar stats.

Assuming the rest of their application was good as they were already accepted early to a HYPSM.

These are about median admit stats for our private at USC, plus top 15% GPAs. Some kids in the same Naviance scatterplot area are rejected. Maybe they just don’t love our school, but it’s a very tough admit for their top majors.
