Fashion related majors at CA public schools

OP wants public but they could potentially get aid at USC.

I would not pay oos for CSU (assuming OP is not in CA) to go into the fashion industry.

OP asked for public CA schools. I assume they are in-state.

Yes I am in state and I don’t want to pay much for a fashion major!

I would do some serious research about kids who go to CSUs who major in fashion design/merch and what their job prospects are.

Like I stated, everyone I know who wanted to go into this business went to FIDM, or some other fashion school I can't remember the name of.

Honestly I don’t believe in DS’s job prospects even if he gets into FIT (which he most likely won’t). He is fairly good but not passionate or hard working.
It will be a problem no matter what he takes up.

Does USC require the non custodial parent to be on the CSS profile? There is a douchey well off ex who may potentially ruin the aid situation

My plan is to have him minor in business, yes.

A Redditor recommends San Francisco State.

"San Francisco State University has one of the largest fashion programs in California. It is an excellent program offering four-year Bachelor of Science Degrees in Apparel Design & Merchandising with much more affordable tuition than the private schools, but with a comparable education."

Please excuse the slight tangent below...it's in reaction to your implied concerns about employability. I'm familiar with the automotive design industry. There is a possibility of doing transportation design with a focus on vehicle interiors. Vehicle interior design is very materials/textiles oriented. I know kids from this Pasadena Art Center program are desirable recruits. I also know that people leave automotive design and go into jewelry and fashion industries (handbags, the crossover material being leather). Automotive design also relies on sketchbook, moodboards, and material palettes for ideation just like clothing design.

https://www.artcenter.edu/academics/undergraduate-degrees/transportation-design/overview.html

The above program is likely expensive but it is prestigious. And I don't know if they would have good scholarships.

Thank you PP for recommending SF state, it’s even commuting distance for us. As for the tangential design concentrations, right now DS is very snobby about only wanting to do clothing design and on his own terms. I think life will teach him the necessary lessons but right now all I am saying is falling on deaf ears.
The good thing is that he isn’t spoiled and is used to living pretty frugally so I’m sure he’ll figure life out.

Did anyone mention Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Northridge? Those aren't purely design the way Long Beach is, but maybe worth considering for combo design + production / merch angles

Thank you, CSUN looks a bit depressive to me in terms of location and student body. I’ll check cal poly Pomona, thanks

Family member got an AA in fashion design and merchandising at a local community college. Later, after some years of work, got a BA in Business. Had a solid career through Macy’s, Calvin Klein and Tommy Bahama.

LA Trade Tech is the best education it would be Fred in state, but living in LA is costly. He’s unlikely to become a creative director, but there are many other jobs in the industry. Most are in LA or OC some in SF. Cal Poly Pomona has merchandising. Long Beach is fashion design. Many other CC’s have fashion design, but most aren’t good. The real learning is on the job so studying near internship opportunities is essential. FIDM is leads to debt and is not better with placement. LATT has great outcomes.

Right, most schools I find are private, but I was hoping for public as we are a low income family so would get a nice break on FAFSA but not CSS because of my ex. It’s bad enough that my kid wants a rich people major, I don’t want to pay for it

North Carolina State University major in Textiles. The department is fabulous and they are great at career development. Many in the fashion industry get a Masters there as well.

Thank me when they graduate and have a job. They will.

Another route is to do supply chain as a major and then move into merchandising, planning or forecasting for a clothing company.

One of mine did that they have a great career and have worked for companies like VF (which owns The NorthFace, Wrangler and others etc), they have also worked for clothing startups as well and snowboard clothing companies like Burton.

Likely more expensive OOS though. Plus cross-country flights from CA.
