Fashion related majors at CA public schools

OP: I think FIDM closed last year and was taken in by Arizona State University. Might check it out, as ASU is public and will have the other options you seek too. Not CA but nearby.

Cal State Sacramento has Fashion Merchandising and Management, UC Davis has a Design BA that can have a fashion emphasis.

There’s a CC near us which offers fashion degrees (AA I guess) so that’s the backup plan! -OP

Thank you I’ll check them out!

This will work if they offer the in state tuition option or if there are other ways to make it worthwhile in terms of tuition, thanks!

LA Trade Tech is the best education it would be Fred in state, but living in LA is costly. He’s unlikely to become a creative director, but there are many other jobs in the industry. Most are in LA or OC some in SF. Cal Poly Pomona has merchandising. Long Beach is fashion design. Many other CC’s have fashion design, but most aren’t good. The real learning is on the job so studying near internship opportunities is essential. FIDM is leads to debt and is not better with placement. LATT has great outcomes.

LATT is probably private which will screw us because of CSS. CSULB sounds like the best option so far! -OP

NYer here. FIT isn't expensive - but living in NY could be. I don't find it a serious place but for kids who want to do their own thing and can really advocate, there are super stars who come out there. And it's not rich kids - those kids know they need jobs

Right, most schools I find are private, but I was hoping for public as we are a low income family so would get a nice break on FAFSA but not CSS because of my ex. It’s bad enough that my kid wants a rich people major, I don’t want to pay for it

North Carolina State University major in Textiles. The department is fabulous and they are great at career development. Many in the fashion industry get a Masters there as well.

Thank me when they graduate and have a job. They will.

Another route is to do supply chain as a major and then move into merchandising, planning or forecasting for a clothing company.

One of mine did that they have a great career and have worked for companies like VF (which owns The NorthFace, Wrangler and others etc), they have also worked for clothing startups as well and snowboard clothing companies like Burton.

Right, but we are in CA so not sure it will be cheap!
Also DS is so far set on fashion design specifically (he may pivot once he is more grounded in reality)

My kid is interested in this too, but what is the job outlook. Mine isn’t necessarily interested in fashion per se, but textiles/design/technology. Everything I’ve read (which is limited) indicates the field is low paying?

You've gotten some good ideas here!

Question: Does he already know how to sew? Have design skills / existing portfolio?

ASU is part of WUE, so worth the while to look in to that too. Good luck!

No, LATTC is a community college, it just has deeper industry ties and solid reputation. It would be zero cost for most in-state students. The issue is cost of living in LA. Many other CC have fashion programs, but I wouldn't recommend them, they tend to have poor quality students and instruction, and don't cover even the basics well. LATTC has some courses that aren't offered anywhere else.

We could probably make it work (I’ve long wanted to move to NYC and get a BMR apartment there eventually) but I doubt DS would be accepted there

He is taking a fashion design elective so there’s a barebones portfolio, yes. His sewing skills are weak and this will always be his weakness imho. I like his croquis though, and the quality of his sketches overall
