Kid 1: AP Psychology, Journalism, Law, double period internship
Kid 2: Sociology, Advanced Digital Arts, Forensics, Horticulture, AP Environmental Science, |
What do they think of those classes? Does Journalism teach writing as well as Eng Lang and Comp? If a kid has one slot, is Horticulture as intensive as AP ES, better in some ways? My son is interested in crimiology. How is law and forensics? Even if he doesn't ultimately pursue it, it sounds like a good grounding in learning to think. |
In Journalism they publish topical articles, do interviews, cover school events. They use social media. It’s definitely not the kind of writing they’re doing in AP English classes. Journalism isn’t considered an honors/advanced class unless you’re an editor. There’s a separate course code for the editors. Horticulture is an enjoyable class for kids who like plants. Also not honors. Definitely not as intensive as AP ES. The Law class (not honors) my dc took was interesting. They had a few mock trials, they watched some movies, they had guest speakers come in to talk about their careers in law enforcement or the justice system. The forensics class (not honors) is the one I’ve heard the least about. My kid is in it now. They had to make a crime scene diorama, which was expensive because we’re not crafty and it had to contain at least 6 pieces of evidence and everything in it had to be to scale. It was cool when it was finished. It seems to be a pretty easy A. |

Thanks, it sounds like they are not too intense, but are interesting and can help create and maintain interest in different subjects. Chemistry is a co-req for Forensics so I'm sure it's also interesting to see practical applications. |
| My 11th grader is taking forensic science at Blair and says it’s his most interesting course. |

It was called Quantitative Literacy when my son took it and it was a math course (and a great elective, IMO). Most people called it either QL or Quant Lit. However, the school website called it "Quantitative Literature." So, so, sad.... |
Electives are something you're interested in or passionate about. Why must an elective be music/PE/art/humanities? For a kid that lives and breathes science and math, AP Chem is an exciting elective. You're right, AP Research isn't the most fun, but the idea of developing a chem based research question and throughly researching and presenting it, makes him giddy. Yes, giddy. He absolutely lights up when he talks about his electives for next year. He takes a creative writing class outside of school and even his fictional stories are based in the lab. Don't feel sorry for my kid. He's taking a class in a subject he loves. |
