Social Media is slowly dying with GenZ

I now only use IG to consume information. I follow kids' schools and activities, local event groups, and people who make content that is helpful to me in some way -- travel tips, Excel spreadsheet tips, financial planning tips, crochet ideas, decorating ideas, parenting strategies, etc.

I don't post and only a handful of the friends and family I follow actually post photos. I think some people still post stories but I refuse to view stories because (1) they are intentionally addictive and will just suck me into spending more time on IG than I want, and (2) I think it's a privacy violation to share that I've viewed a story with the creator -- what I choose to look at is my business and I think it's weird IG does this.

I used to be a heavy IG user and posted frequently. But like OP said, I realized I was mostly posting for validation and to try and project a specific image to friends and family. Like most IG users, I heavily curated what I posted and was just getting too focused on trying to use the app to get people to see me a certain way. I am happy to have my privacy back. I can still share photos with people via text, and do, but it feels more like just sharing a piece of my life than trying to craft a whole image for me and my family.

Younger generation is on instagram and tiktok. I am older and still in FB to keep in touch with close family and friend that are not living nearby and for some health related and travel related groups

Well, we are all here!

I'm on FB to keep up with people.

I'm in Instagram yet never post. I'm on there to follow some family and friends.

I used LinkedIn for business and have made so much money from it that I will probably keep it.

I think there is more of a lean of lookers and not posters. I rarely ever post but I will comment on others and send likes. I think that the ads have sucked the fun out of it.

I myself gave up Facebook years ago as I realized it just wasn’t healthy to seek online validation. Do you still post? Which platforms? Do your kids? How frequently? And these days AI is a real risk to your privacy are you worried about AI images of you or your loved one?

S9 you moved to this site to seek that validation ?

Haha. Good point.

Do you feel good now with our validation, OP?

My 17 year old only just recently got an IG account. I get the impression she uses it to message people far more than regular old texting.

Yes and they're sharing pictures on snapchat. OP doesn't know any GenZ kids.

They’re on YouTube. It’s worse than Facebook.

Do you follow your kids and all their friends on social media? That’s weird, no wonder they’re not posting anything. They’ve probably moved to a different platform that you’re not on.

And what does you giving up FB have to do with GenZ?
